What we're reading this week

Miranda: With all the buzz about this latest coronavirus, this is an interesting read about how the web has kept it from being worse through shared research and reporting.

Josh: If you’ve been wanting to learn Swift, Apple’s proprietary programming language, you’re in luck. Earlier this week, Apple released their Swift Playgrounds app on the Mac App Store.

Ben: This week's shout-out goes to the New York Times, whose journalists have checked the math on the Iowa caucus results, and documented the errors.

Paola: Are you more productive when you're working remote?

Kay: Are you spending more time on gaining new subscribers than you are learning from those who leave? Here's a great read on why creating a user-friendly experience for canceling should be a top priority.

Inndy: NASA has announced four new mission concepts which will receive development and maturation funding. If everything works out, I might have another cousin landing on Venus soon!

SHOUT OUT

Work we admire by our journalism/tech peers

The words "Seeing 2020" are overlaid on a white cutout of the contiguous United States, against a violet/indigo/magenta/pink background decorated with symbols related to the Census.

Reveal and the Center for Cooperative Media are joining forces to empower local and ethnic media covering the Census through the Seeing 2020 program. They're providing a tip repository, training, webinars, assistance, collaboration facilitation, and small reporting stipends.

MuckRock and the Rutgers Institute for Information Policy & Law have compiled a database of algorithms used by governments for a variety of purposes. Dig into your government's algorithms this weekend!

GNI Audience Lab has published their research on newsletters, drawing from seven newsrooms' experience and practices. This comes with five evaluation metrics, and four recommended best practices.

Thomas Wilburn of the NPR visuals team has written an experimental competing parser for ArchieML, with a couple of key differences regarding multiline fields and list-item parsing.
