News from Harvest Workers Coop
Hello Friends,

We've been busy planning our events and projects for the year and the ways we can respond to the climate emergency.

In the shop we have been extending our zero waste lines and will develop this more with your suggestions .. read more below!

It is a challenging time for so many reasons and it is even more important that we support landworkers working locally and organically to nourish the soil, the environment and our communities.

The focus, as always, is to help build both individual and community resilience for the future through food based learning and skills.

Hope to see you soon!
Martin, Sara, Jo and Kevin

Seasonal News
Here are some seasonal updates from the lovely folk who supply and work with the Harvest Farm Shop.

Henry and Liv from Down Farm have been prepping beds in the sunshine! Their great run up to Spring has begun which means taking out last years crops, weeding and mulching the beds getting ready for 2020 crops. It’s very exciting!

Sam and Katie at Taw River have been fencing on the farm! They have recently erected over 3000 metres of sustainable chestnut stock fencing sourcing the majority of the stakes locally from a traditional chestnut coppice. They have replaced old field boundary fences to safely contain the stock, aiding their rotational grazing techniques and to protect the creation of new habitats as part of their amazing Rowden Wildlife Project.

Emma and the team at The Boatyard Bakery hosted the annual FLOW PROJECT Wassail with activities, story telling and singing before everyone joined the all important walk down river to the fruit trees to wake them up! Wassail to them all!

Martin from Harvest has written Between Seasons and Soil a blog post about the challenges and activities of the season
"Harvesting of winter vegetable crops continues despite the inclement wet weather. Every winter differs from the last. This winter has been a real challenge for farmers and their pickers with the constant wet and windy storms coming off what was a wet soggy autumn for getting their crops off the field and into the packhouses. This poses risks to soil health and the carbon locked up in it..." Read more here

Zero Waste Bulk Buying

It is great that people are buying more of our zero waste dry goods. We are now able to order 25kg of some lines such as pumpkin seeds, muesli, quinoa and red lentils.

This means that the price to you is lower. But we need to back up that statement so .....

Pumpkin Seed price comparison

(take a deep breath before reading on!!)

We used MySupermarket.co.uk on 11th February to check Morrisons Tesco Sainbury's, Waitrose, Asda, Poundland and Amazon!
The cheapest deal we could find on non organic pumpkin seeds was £6 / kg from Asda and the average cost was £8.30 / kg.
Organic pumpkin seeds are more expensive. If you are prepared to buy 1kg and order online then the Amazon price is £7.99 / kg The supermarkets are averaging a staggering £20 / kg!!
As we are now buying 25kg sacks we can sell organic pumpkin seeds at £7.80 / kg and you can bring your own bag and buy only 20g if you want! This is cheaper than the organic prices we researched and cheaper than most supermarket non-organic seeds. You will of course have to suffer a friendly shopping environment, the risk of people talking to you and the very real danger that you might be tempted to buy more Good Mood Food!

We do take our price comparisons seriously. Please do get in touch with any useful information!

We would like to expand the range of zero waste goods we sell. So look out for the Grand Grocery Survey coming soon! Sara is working on this to help us decide on what other sacks and bags of organic produce we should be buying.
Recipe Book
Pea Flour Pancakes

Ingredients (serves 4)

For savoury pancakes
  • 3 cups green pea flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 3 cups diary or plant based oat milk
  • Wild garlic leaves. Wash well and rip into small pieces
For sweet pancakes use yellow pea flour, three mashed bananas and a bit of maple syrup.

Directions

  1. Combine flour and salt
  2. Add remaining ingredients and mix until smooth.
  3. Leave for 30 minutes
  4. Heat oil in pan and then cook pancakes for 2 minutes on each side.
We found cooking 1 ladle of batter to make a smaller pancake worked better than a large one.

Interested? We are cooking pea flour pancakes at the Winter Feast Family Workshop on the 22nd February!
