NOTES FROM THE DEAN
It might not come as too much of a surprise to many of you, but over here at Fleet Library we are all about books these days. Sure, we have some wonderful electronic resources for you to explore from the comfort of your own desk chair, bed, or café table – stalwarts like the JStor Arts and Sciences databases (to which we are fully subscribed on a trial basis this year) and new, dynamic platforms like Library Stack;  but what really stands out right now are the books. And we’re not just saying so.

Close to 10% more books have been checked out so far this year versus last year at this time; 19% more have been pulled off shelves and casually browsed (yes, we count those books left sitting on tables!), and we’ve had more submissions for our Whitehill/Baker Artists’ Book Contest than ever (see exhibition and award event info below). So, why not come over and check out, browse, or admire some books today?

Have questions about what it takes to write, design, and publish all these books? Well, we can help you with that, too! Keep reading this newsletter for information about the two faculty book launches coming up in the Fleet Library Living Room.

Hope to see you there or in the stacks soon!

Margot McIlwain Nishimura

JOIN US at the RISD Museum for a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to gender, art, and feminism. We’ll be editing inside Pablo Helguera's Raid the Icebox Now exhibition, Inventarios/Inventories, which draws upon Latin American artists in the Museum's collection. If you’d like to edit, sign up for updates! For the curious, we urge you to stop by to show your support, learn more about Wikipedia’s well-documented gender disparity. More details here.
SECOND FLOOR: In our second floor Special Collections exhibition case, now through March 20, you'll find In the Day’s Work: D.B. Updike & The Merrymount Press: an exhibition of books published at the Merrymount Press, Boston, 1900-1940.

COME IN AND EXPLORE: Fleet Library recently collaborated with the Center for SEI and Campus Exhibitions to highlight Michelle Alexander's MLK 2020 keynote and her acclaimed book, The New Jim Crow. This exhibit centers on books in the library collection about civil rights, mass incarceration and artists tackling the persistent problem of racial inequality in the United States. All books on display are available to check out. Photo courtesy of Rene Payne.

THE MANNING RARE WOODS COLLECTION may be a resource administered by the Department of Furniture Design, but the RISD and global communities can find these woods Fleet Library’s Material Resource Center, both as as a visual display provided by Furniture Design and circulating samples, as well as electronically as a Public Collection on the JSTOR Forum platform, an Image Gallery on Digital Commons @ RISD and as RISD holdings on the Material Order shared material database. Regarding the latter, a Furniture student acquired wood shavings and scanned these at various magnification levels to represent their cellular structure using equipment at the Edna Lawrence Nature Lab.
COMING SOON: Saturday, April 11, 2020, 11am-5pm at the Fleet Library. RISD UNBOUND celebrates artists’ books, zines, and experimental printed matter created by artists, designers, publishers, artists and enthusiasts from RISD and the region. Free and open to the public!
