Rabbi’s Message

In this week’s Parashah, Yitro, the Israelites prepare for and receive revelation at Mt. Sinai. But as they are preparing for revelation, something troubling happens. In response to God’s instruction to prepare the people, Moshe tells the people, “Be ready for the third day: do not go near a woman.” (Exodus 19:15)

God did not give this instruction, and it’s clear that indeed all the people were at Sinai, regardless of gender. But Moshe, presumably preoccupied with his own connotations of “readiness,” passed them along to the people in ways that had the effect of sidelining women from the community.

Moshe is a mirror to us all. As we receive Torah this week, we should ask: How do we push others to the side even when (or especially when) we are trying to do holy work? Do we use language in ways that make other people invisible? And what can we do about it?
