EC12 Class News

Ahoy Gang

Running behind schedule for this issue, but better late than never. There has just been a lot on my plate. One of those tasks was to come up with a logo to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the EC12 Class.
We have been going around trying to figure out how best to celebrate the 50th. We have been looking into embroidered hats and shirts. The shirts are proving to be expensive, but may still be doable if enough people want them. For now we are going to focus on hats.

These hats will be available for $20. They are very nice hats with adjustable cloth strap and not that cheap plastic snap tab stuff. We hope to have a first run of hats ready in a couple weeks and we will ship them to regions to be sold at various regattas. Shipping to individuals will require an additional $5 shipping charge.

The shirts will require pre-payment and sizes of course. The issue is distributing the shirts to the individuals. Shipping costs are high for a single shirt and we would have to price them at around $35 each. We are thinking that getting orders from skippers can more easily be delivered at upcoming regattas and save a lot of money so that we can price the shirts closer to $25 each. Larger sizes will be a little more.
We hope to have an order form set up soon, but in the mean time, I would love to hear from skippers if they are interested in getting a hat or a shirt or both. Please email me floridaec12@comcast.net and let me know.

Gator Regatta

Noverber 9-10, 2019 by John Goldsworthy

The annual and popular Gator Regatta for EC12 was held at Ashland Pond, The Villages, FL, on November 9-10. Nineteen skippers had registered for the regatta. This event kicks off the EC12 regatta season for the Florida EC12s. Skippers were divided into two fleets, A and B. The promotion/relegation system was used. Entries included many fine skipper and past national champions so competition was tight.
Ashland Pond provides perfect sailing conditions for all wind directions but north. Saturday morning arrived with strong and gusty winds from the north. Though it took some creativity, the race team managed to set a reasonably fair course which included a reaching start to a leeward mark and then a beat to weather. Competitors sailed this course two and a half times around before finishing at the weather and offset marks. Nine races were completed Saturday before we retired to a local eatery for a fine meal.
Sunday dawned with no major changes to the sailing conditions. Winds continued from the north, but they were light and variable. Each heat had 10-11 sailors as 4 were promote from B and four relegate down from A. This made for tight and competitive racing. Three skippers from the local fleet sailed their first regatta. A significant number given the aging population within the EC12 class.

New Year's Regatta Region 7 Championship

December 7-8, 2020 by John Goldsworthy

The Villages Model Yacht Squadron was fortunate to host the EC12 District 7 Championships. The opportunity proved sporting since Saturday arrived with winds in excess of 20mph.
Everyone started with B-Rigs, but even they proved challenging. Our Race Director, Bruce Farr, set a twice around course using most of Ashland Pond. We had a total of 23 EC12 skippers which were initially divided into A and B Fleets using our National Seeding List. As usual, B fleet went first with 15 starters – four top finishers to be promoted to A Fleet. The more experienced A Fleet skippers seemed to have less trouble coping with the high wind and higher gusts, but they had their problems too. At days end, only four points separated the leaders.
Saturday evening, we all met at Arnold Palmer Legends Country Club for an excellent meal and a perfect opportunity to exchange sailing experiences and reinforce camaraderie.
Well some say opposites attract and they certainly did Sunday. We could see our reflections in the water. No wind at all. We delayed starting until a little (very little) wind came in.  The first couple of races took forever, but gradually the wind built to about 4mph. We finished the regatta with a total of 13 races (26 heats) allowing us to drop 2 races. Alan Perkins, defending champion, once again sailed consistently and won the regatta.
