2020 is off to a great start with the addition of some exciting new topics and the renewal of some older ones.  In the spirit of constant improvement, PlaceSpeak will be launching its long-anticipated new front end redesign, based on considerable usability testing conducted over the last two years. In 2020, PlaceSpeak looks forward to exciting advancements in new use-cases for authenticated citizen engagement.

We are happy to announce Gordon Hardwick as PlaceSpeak’s next President, as of January 1, 2020. 

Gordon joined PlaceSpeak in January 2016 as Business Development Executive. Over the last three years, he has worked closely with clients at all levels of government, as well as private sector, non-profit and community organizations. Under Hardwick’s leadership, we are certain that PlaceSpeak will continue to grow and develop its civic network, establishing it as the top-of-mind solution for authentic and reliable public and stakeholder engagement.


After several years, PlaceSpeak is excited to be ramping up its first pilot project with the Province of British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure's Highway 97 Lake Country Planning Study consultation.

Highway 97 Lake Country Planning Study

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has set up a PlaceSpeak consultation topic including a survey and poll, as well as an Open House, to encourage public participation in the Highway 97 Lake Country planning study. The ministry aims to identify the future transportation needs of Highway 97, between duck Lake and Lodge Road in Lake Country, concentrating on long-term infrastructure strategy to improve safety and traffic flow.

 

NEW CONSULTATIONS

Yellowknife Lottery By-law Review

City of Yellowknife has started a new discussion in regards to reviewing lottery Licence By-law 4092. The January 2000 By-law, determines how the city regulates lottery activities within Yellowknife. The City is seeking public input on the rules regarding bingos, raffle and lottery tickets, and the licensing fee structure.

CVRD Official Community Plan Review

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is harmonizing and modernizing its Official Community Plan, and to do this, they want to consult with the public. The CVRD believes that the population growth, evolving economy and changing climate requires local action. They hope to modernize their Regional OCP to provide greater clarity and flexibility, as well as standardized information and a greater opportunity to innovate.

Animal Control 

The Town of Lakeshore is currently updating their regulations regarding animals, this includes those relating to dangerous dogs and the abandonment of animals on public or private property. They’re looking for input on a variety of subtopics within this; including patrol programmes, tethering limits and pickup services for small animals.

Tree Protection Bylaws Discussion 

Following the 2019 Strategic Plan for the District of North Saanich,reviewing the Tree Bylaw became a district priority, according to the 2020 Draft Strategic Plan. North Saanich Residents Association has opened a discussion on this issue, believing that public consultation is a key milestone in the reviewing process. Discussion questions include whether tree protection should be expanded in the revised bylaw and whether residents support the protection of indigenous trees and those identified in sensitive ecosystems. Comments in support of the discussion have been coming in, with an expressed need for greater protection for trees in North Saanich.
