The Power of the Volunteer

Dear friends,

Our volunteers truly are the heartbeat of our organization. Every presentation over the last eight years has been given by volunteers.

Other organizations could not believe we had been able to do this. We had even thought in the early years it may need to be paid staff to make this many presentations. However, we soon learned the power of the volunteer.

It changes everything. First, when students understand someone is giving of their time with nothing in return simply because they care about them, it makes a huge statement. They then see the compassion and caring spirit through our volunteers and many students thank them for giving of their time and caring enough to come speak to them.

This year we have created a new event to honor our wonderful volunteers. Each month we will host a Time to Shine event honoring a different volunteer. This is an opportunity for not only us to honor them, but for them to invite special people in their lives to come learn more about their passion and their work with Pure.

This month was our first Time to Shine event featuring Evelyn Houser. The room was filled with so many family and friends who love and support Evelyn. There were also many other volunteers who respect and love Evelyn as well.

Evelyn is a wealth of knowledge with her medical background and continues to teach us every time we see her. We value her for so many reasons.

Part of this new program is hearing from our honoree just why they chose to volunteer, what they enjoy most, and actually demonstrate one of their favorite object lessons they do with the kids. This is a great way to bring the guests into a live classroom situation so they can see how the students get to interact with our curriculum and use their critical thinking skills to make the healthiest choices.

These events are open to anyone who would like to attend to learn more about our programs and to come out to honor one of our volunteers as we give them their “Time to Shine.”

Next month, we will honor Mary Wallace on Tuesday, March 24 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. We invite you to join us!

Be blessed,

How Referee Moms Master Discipline

The next time you watch a football, soccer, or lacrosse game, pay special attention to the referees. The really good ones keep their cool even when parents yell at them or kids complain about a call. Referees are impartial. Their emotions don’t affect their decisions because the rules are the rules—it’s not personal. The same goes for mom’s rules.

Connection: A Vital Part of Raising Happy, Healthy Kids

Parenting has got to be one of the hardest jobs there is. Completely rewarding, yes. But also filled daily with new challenges, growth spurts, and development.

I had a sobering reminder of the weight of parenting a few months ago. I was in a small group with a handful of other women, and a major component of the group’s content had us look at how we were raised, the defining events and relationships from our childhood, and how all of this contributed to who we are today. Most, if not all, of these women shared how they had to seriously work through a hurt they received from their parents or a lie they had picked up in their childhood about their value.
