The Watershed release their new single 'Dark Desire'

Dark Desire is The Watershed’s first single release from their sophomore album Planets Away. This single displays a complex exploration of hope through a deeply moving nu-folk sensibility.

Dark Desire is a battle to quell the storm raging inside. We could let go and lose ourselves but it asserts that we are worth the fight and the noise can be silenced.

The Watershed are Kim O’Connor and Nick Freestone, they’re primarily an acoustic duo producing dreamy melodies with stellar song-writing. To contrast, production on this track uses triggered guitar percussion and sampled synths, creating pulses, anxious echoes and an energy that is uniquely intimate. Considering the track’s synthetic space and air, you may be surprised to know that most parts were created on an acoustic guitar. The production atmosphere complements the lyrics perfectly, which are of a desperate inner voice seeking aDer what is always out of reach.

‘What if ALL my wanting burst out at the seams...?’

Nick and Kim have a unique writing style, never writing or recording in the room together. Both met and married their other halves and found their homes far in Sydney and the Central Coast. Their songs bounce back and forth between them with parts and styles until the song settles into its own ‘space’. This gives their music something that can only be described as “The Watershed sound”. This process, developed across their self-titled debut in 2017, continues to strengthen and the emotional resonance of Dark Desire is testament to their connection as songwriters, retaining an immediacy in sentiment regardless of proximity.

Stronger together, the duo share stories and songs in separate cities. Nick and Kim have written, recorded and produced an intricate and raw collection of songs for their follow up EP Planets Away, Dark Desire leads the way with the aim of translating heart and mind to paper.
