APPLICATIONS OPEN!
IRIS Workshop: Joining the Data Revolution: Big Data in Education and Social Science Research, June 15-19

Join IRIS in Ann Arbor this summer for a week-long workshop on how to leverage big data resources and tools to advance your education and social science (ESS) research.

This is an introductory-level course aimed at researchers in education and social science fields who are interested in gaining experience working with large-scale restricted-use data. No prior experience in quantitative data analysis is required. Datasets on topics including post-secondary educational opportunities, employment outcomes, and the makeup of research teams will be featured in the workshop.

Participants will acquire skills that will enable them to pursue external funding for ESS research using big data.

The workshop is free, but space is limited. We will be selecting participants based on their research interests and with the goal of including a diverse set of academic fields, institutions and people.

Please apply by March 15.

XSEDE and IRIS collaborate to study the impact of research supercomputing

A partnership between the eXtreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) and the Institute for Research on Innovation and Science (IRIS) will examine how access to advanced research computing resources and services available via XSEDE affect the collaboration networks and scientific productivity of participating researchers.

IRIS will link the IRIS UMETRICS dataset containing transaction-level administrative data on sponsored research projects from dozens of the nation’s leading higher educational institutions to data from XSEDE allocations. This will result in a new way to examine how access to supercomputers influences the way researchers collaborate with colleagues and the productivity of individuals and research teams.

Researcher Spotlight: Michigan State University Economist Dr. Lisa Cook

From testifying on Capitol Hill to writing an opinion piece on the pages of the New York Times, Dr. Lisa Cook has helped bring new attention and research focus to racial and gender inequalities in economic and academic opportunities and outcomes. Now, she is using IRIS data to continue her research by looking at how such inequalities are manifested in the “innovation economy,” through the interactions of patent awards, wealth creation, and research training.
