WSPTA Region 2 Winter Conference

We are excited to be hosting a Region 2 Winter Conference at the LWSD Resource Center on Tuesday, February 25. You are invited to join us! Attend training classes, network with PTA leaders from across the region, provide feedback to WSPTA and enhance your leadership skills. Please register for this free event online.

Washington State PTA Listening Tour

Meet Andrew Estep, WSPTA Executive Director and participate in the Listening Tour during the conference. A message from Andrew Estep: Your voice is important in helping us shape the future of Washington State PTA and the work we do for all children. Tell us how things are going for you and your PTA. The WSPTA Listening Tour is part of the 2020-2023 strategic planning process. A panel of state board directors and other volunteer leaders will be there to hear your concerns and the challenges that you face. Your honest and heartfelt answers will be integrated into the state’s plans for the next three years.

Please join us for one or both sessions during our Region 2 Winter Conference.

Founders' Day Luncheon

Founders' Day Luncheon will be held Friday, February 28, 2020 at Sahalee Country Club. This Founders' Day is also LWPTSA Council's 40th charter anniversary celebration. Our guest speaker is Sharon Lacey, motivational speaker, former teacher and author of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Dementia: A Stand Up Comedian's Race Against Time."

Special Education Resource Fair

Come learn about and talk to vendors offering after school, summer, and other recreational activities and other services to students on IEPs, 504s and IHPs, and their families. Children welcome. Persons with disabilities who anticipate needing accommodations, those who need an interpreter or who have questions about access may email us at specialeducation@lwptsa.net in advance of the event.

Kirkland Safer Routes to Schools Meeting

 The City of Kirkland will provide and update on the Safer Routes to Schools Action Plan on March 5th directly following the LWPTSA Council membership meeting (about 11:30 am) at the Lake Washington Resource Center. The City of Kirkland is interested in input on plans from Kirkland PTSAs, but all interested PTSAs are welcome to come and learn.
 
The meeting will focus on results from the Safe and Active Transportation Survey, prioritizing projects in neighborhoods and around schools, and ID'ing what incentives to try out to encourage kids to walk/bike to school. How will your school be impacted? Come make sure your voice is heard!

LWSD Art Docent Workshop - March 6

The LWSD Teaching & Learning Department is offering an Art Docent Workshop on Friday, March 6. Come experience two LWSD Art Docent Program value projects, while gaining practical instructional tips.
  • Topic: Creating value with paint and pen
  • Special Guests: Junior League of Seattle will share about opportunities for LWSD elementary schools to participate in the 2020-21 Northwest Art Project traveling art exhibit (formerly BAM Art of Discovery)
  • Date: Friday, March 6
  • Time:  10:00 – 11:30 or 12:30 – 2:00 (sessions are identical)

LWPTSA Scholarships Available

The Lake Washington PTSA Council is pleased to roll out its 2020 Scholarship Program! Each year in the spring, Council offers several student scholarships and two $500 staff scholarships. This year’s Student Scholarship Program will include 13 scholarships of $1,250 each.

Applications for both staff and student scholarships are due by NOON on April 2, 2020. The Scholarship Program is funded by money raised at the Council’s annual Scholarship Basket Auction, by annual donations from the 44 PTSAs in the LWSD and LWEA, and by donations from the greater community.

YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID WORKSHOP 
Lake Washington Schools Foundation and Evergreen Hospital are providing training to help adults identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders in children.

WSPTA Essay Contest

This statewide essay contest explores the important and varied influencers in the lives and education of children – from the children’s perspective. The essay contest is a platform for students to share their appreciation. The contest is open to all students in grades K-12. The application deadline is March 1 each year. Find guidelines, application forms and more on the WSPTA website.

WSPTA Standards of Excellence

Does your PTA: Have regular meetings, communicate to your members regularly, have goals and objectives, and programs to meet those goals? Do you have an active membership campaign and does your PTA recognize volunteers and present awards? Does your PTA follow the Standards of Affiliation? Does your PTA attend council meetings or share information from WSPTA and NPTA? If you answered, ‘yes’, (and we know that most of our PTAs do all of these things, and more!) your PTA is an excellent candidate to apply for the WSPTA Standards of Excellence Award! Entry deadline: 3/1/2020. February Board To-Do List

  • Apply for WSPTA Awards of Excellence awards and Membership Achievement awards. Applications are due March 1.
  • Make sure your nominating committee is in place and trained.
  • Launch the WSPTA Essay Contest for students. Submissions are due March 1.
  • Attend a winter training or conference in your region or neighboring region.
  • Was your PTA incorporated in February?  If so, then your annual Corporation Renewal is due on 2/28. The annual corporation report is due regardless of your PTA’s annual income and is separate from the Charitable Organization Registration/ Renewal.
