SNSW and ReachOut dive in together for mental health

Did you know that 1 in 4 people aged 14-25 live with mental health difficulties? 70% of them don’t seek help.

Swimming NSW and ReachOut are joining forces to provide swimming communities across NSW with access to practical support, tools and tips to help young people tackle mental health issues.

At the 2019 Swimming NSW Youth Leadership Camp, the attendees strongly voiced that youth mental health was an area that needed to be better supported across the swimming club community. Taking this feedback on board, Swimming NSW's Youth Advisory Panel was tasked to source a partner to provide this support. ReachOut was quickly identified as an ideal partner. Their trusted self-help information, peer-support program and referral tools save lives by helping young people to be well and stay well.

A big part of the partnership will be Swimming NSW’s strong support of ReachOut’s Laps for Life - an annual fundraising event that encourages people to raise money in support of young people and their mental health by swimming laps throughout March.

You can learn more about how ReachOut helps with youth wellbeing and Laps for Life by visiting their booth on Day 2 (Saturday 22 February)
of the 2020 NSW Country Championships.

New requirements for
Working with Children Check

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) has imposed new proof-of-identity requirements for anyone applying for or renewing their Working With Children Check. ACIC requires these higher standards to minimise the risk of identity theft and to further protect the safety of children.

These changes came into effect on 1 December 2019.

Swim Central resources

Whether you're new to Swimming NSW or an existing member, you may have some questions about using Swim Central. It's an important new sports administration platform that will ultimately streamline the way we administer swimming nationally, but it can take time (for all of us!) to get used to new systems.

Help is at hand. We have created extensive resources to help you better navigate Swim Central, with the answers to your most common questions via a large number of printed guides on our website and a library of video tutorials on YouTube

Be sure to check them out the next time you hit unchartered waters!

Congratulations
Suzanne Bergensen OAM

Suzanne received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) at last month's Australia Day Honours for her service to swimming. She has been a technical official for both pool and open water events since 1993, was on the Board of Swimming NSW from 2001-2018 and was made a life member of the state body in 2018.

Local heroes, just like Suzanne, are the backbone of our sport and swimming community. We rely on the service of these passionate and dedicated individuals for everything from officiating at competitive events to contributing to the strategic direction of swimming in NSW.

Do you know someone who deserves to be recognised for their 'outstanding service'? Show your appreciation by nominating them for a SNSW Service Excellence Award.

Any member can nominate a Swimming NSW member.

Nominations for the 2019 Service Excellence Awards are open until
31 March 2020
