START THIS WEEK
If your student is involved in a Lawton after school enrichment class for the Spring 2020 session, please remind them of their after school plans this week.

For those of you new to after school programs, please make sure that, in case of a student absence, you contact both Lawton attendance AND the after school instructor to let them know.

Thank you!

EARLY BIRD PRICES END FRIDAY, MARCH 6TH
It's time to buy tickets for Lawton's annual Spring Art Auction, which will be held again at the Ballard Bay Club on Saturday, April 4, 2020, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Early bird ticket prices end this Friday, March 6th, so if you'd like to save a little money, while also helping the auction committee get an early estimate on attendance, buy your tickets today!

Interested in what's on the menu? You'll find the schedule and menu on the auction website.

Ticket prices go back to regular pricing on Saturday, March 7th.

Can't find a sitter? Remember, we have plenty of attendees who buy single tickets and attend alone or with a group of other solo attendees in order to partake in a well-deserved parent night out.
AUCTION SPONSORS
For the next month, we will be highlighting our auction sponsors. The majority of our sponsors are local, family-run businesses, so please show your support by checking out their websites, thanking them for their sponsorship, or telling a friend or two about them. Thank you!
GOLD SPONSOR:
Looking for a dentist? Lawton parent and SeattleMet Top Dentist, Dr. Bryan Brenner, is sponsoring the Spring Art Auction for the fourth year in a row. Brenner Dental Care on Queen Anne provides cosmetic and general dentistry services for patients of all ages, including sedation dentistry, dental implants, and same-day crowns. Thank you again for your sponsorship!
PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER:
ParentMap 2019 Golden Teddy Award winning Lydia Brewer of Lydia Brewer Photography donated her time and creativity to photographing our students over the last several weeks. For those of you new to Lawton, families anticipate these professional photos every year! They will first be available for purchase the night of the auction. Previews will be available at Lawton as the auction draws closer.
Also, a BIG thank you to the following local businesses:
It's not too late to sponsor our Spring Art Auction! If you're interested in supporting our PTA-sponsored activities and funding, please contact Amanda Armes.
2020-2021 PTA BOARD VACANCIES
Are you looking for a high-impact way to contribute your child’s education that doesn’t require daytime hours?

The Lawton PTA board needs you! Many of our PTA board members’ terms are up this spring, so it’s time for some new people and perspectives to join our team for 2020-2021! Monthly evening meetings are one hour long, and free childcare is available.

Who is a typical board member?

There isn’t one! Many current board members work outside the home, while some are stay-at-home parents. Some are parents of young ones, while others have children preparing for middle school. Some have past experience on boards while others do not. We ALL care about this special community of students, staff, and teachers, and want to ensure it continues to thrive. We value diversity in its many forms, and encourage YOU to consider one of the following roles:
  • Co-President
  • Co-Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Advocacy
  • Cashier
  • Advocacy
  • Co-Fundraiser
  • Staff Liaison
If you’re interested in one of these roles, or in finding out more about the board, please email Amy Lakhani at amymlakhani@gmail.com and she will connect you with a board member who can call or meet with you.
PTA MEMBERSHIP REQUIRED TO VOTE
Even though we're halfway through the school year, it's not too late to join the PTA if you haven't already! The Lawton PTA provides enriching educational opportunities and improves the well-being of our students and school community.

When you join, you're supporting PTA activities such as Field Day, Art Docents, Move-A-Thon and After-School Enrichment. In addition, you have the opportunity to vote on how you want PTA funds allocated to support Lawton's programs and resources. Remember, only PTA members can vote on the budget!

If you would like to join, please register online.

KIDS NEED TIME FOR SCHOOL LUNCH
Please contact your legislators and help advocate to support Washington State PTA's priority issue "Best Practices for School Meals".

WSPTA recognizes that schools play a critical role in providing access to adequate nutrition and the formation of healthy eating habits that are a cornerstone to health, well-being, learning, and academic achievement.

For too many Washington students, meals at school are their only food for the day. Without adequate time to enjoy a complete meal, students may be prevented from reaching their full potential. Customize your message here.
P.E. NEWS: MARCH MADNESS
March Madness!

All Lawton students will be participating in a basketball unit during the month of March! Students will work on fundamentals, including dribbling, passing, shooting, and 3rd - 5th graders will even fill out March Madness brackets.

Ask your child to tell you about basketball kickball, bump and other basketball games throughout March.
STEAM WEEK
CARDBOARD PROJECTS & ELECTRONIC-FREE CREATIVE PLAY
STEAM week starts the week of March 9th. You received a flyer from your classroom teacher detailing all of week's events. On Friday, March 13th, students are encouraged to bring in their cardboard creations! Join the other 1,918,872 participants from 80 different countries by putting down the electronics and immersing yourself in creative play.

If you need inspiration, check out www.cardboardchallenge.com
CREATE A MASTERPIECE WITH
R. GREGORY CHRISTIE
Thanks in generous parent support of the PTA, we are able to help fund visits from authors like Caldecott honoree R. Gregory Christie (visiting our school March 5).

In order to provide these same kinds of experiences for low-income schools, Antioch University is hosting this fun painting event. Proceeds from the event support the Multicultural Children's Literature Celebration.

For more information, please RSVP here. Don't forget to enter the code MASTERPIECE to get 50% off the registration fee.
TACO TUESDAY
KUDOS & CLARIFICATION
Thank you Ms. Dixon and Dr. Deno for taking the time to dish out gelato at the last Taco Tuesday!

Fundraising Clarification: The owners of Nutty Squirrel want parents to know that due to an employee miscommunication, some Lawton families were told the portion of sales from their purchases would not go to the PTA because it was after the agreed upon hours. That is incorrect. Taco Tuesdays are from 3-7 p.m., so if you were one of those families who were told your purchase did not count...it did.

Thank you!

The next Taco Tuesday will be next week Tuesday, March 10th.
3RD GRADE MUSIC CONCERT
This is just a reminder to mark your calendars, 3rd grade families! The 3rd grade Music Concert will be on Thursday, March 19. More details about sign-ups to help set-up will be out to you soon.
