THIS WEEK’S NEWS
Dr. Lauren Heckelman’s paper “Quantifying the biochemical state of knee cartilage in response to running using T1rho magnetic resonance imaging” reports that approximately 65 million individuals in the US report jogging or running within the last 12 months. But despite the widespread popularity of running, there is a little data on the impact of running on knee cartilage health, especially in the long-term.

Innovative Treatment Plan Salvages Patient’s Quality of Life

After falling off a 9-foot ladder, a 57-year-old man sustained severe fractures of both ankles. Seeking a series of second opinions for salvaging his ankles, the patient was given treatment options that included—among others—bilateral amputation. Contemplating the gravity of that opinion, the patient next presented at Duke to Karl M. Schweitzer Jr., MD, who offered an innovative surgical approach to minimize the impact on the patient’s daily life. Dr. Schweitzer’s care was highlighted in a story in Duke Health’s Clinical Practice Today.
Tierra Webster receives the Strength Hope and Caring Clinical Award
Please join us in congratulating Tierra Webster for winning the Strength Hope and Caring Clinical Award!

Tierra is an athletic trainer working with pediatric patients at Duke Orthopedics Heritage and has a patient living over two hours away from the clinic. Tierra had arranged for Medicaid transportation to the clinic after the mom told her that she couldn't afford to bring her child to an upcoming appointment, saying “It’s either put gas in the car or feed my kids.” The patient had a 10 a.m. post-op appointment and arrived early via the transportation, checking in at 8:35 a.m. The provider was able to see them early and they were done with their appointment by 10 a.m. The bus was unavailable to pick them up at 10 a.m. and despite calls to the dispatch center, the patient was still in the clinic at 4 p.m. Tierra called again–explaining the office was closing soon and it was raining outside. She was told “When patients use transport services they are aware they aren’t the only patient and there may be a wait time.” Tierra tried to contact the driver again but the driver could still give no arrival time. Tierra said, after she left work, “I couldn’t stop thinking about the patient and I called Heritage to ask if they were still waiting.”  When she found out the patient and mom were still there–Tierra quietly returned with two meals and then quickly left–hoping her act of kindness hadn't been seen. The staff had offered snacks and beverages throughout the long day but Tierra was worried about a blood sugar drop because the patient hadn’t had a full meal all day.

The patient’s mother called to thank everyone and reported that they didn’t arrive home until 10 p.m. Tierra is a personification of what Strength, Hope, and Caring is all about and we are lucky to have her on our team!
Member of (OTD) Curriculum Team Launches New Podcast for Black History Month 🎙

Tomeico Faison, OTR/L is passionate about impacting diversity, leadership, entrepreneurship in occupational therapy. “I created the podcast to highlight the achievements of therapy entrepreneurs and leaders of color and to help support them in their roles. As an African-American occupational therapist it is important to me to help increase diversity in our profession. I believe that one way to do so is for minorities to hear from other minorities who are in leadership positions.”

Tomeico is the founder of Therapeutic Solutions of North Carolina, serving underserved populations across NC since 2003, including people with low vision in collaboration with Duke Eye Center. Additionally, she is a business consultant and certified business coach for aspiring therapy entrepreneurs and universities that have interest in entrepreneurship education like the new Occupational Therapy Doctorate Division at Duke.

“It is an honor to be a part of this community and the Duke OTD curriculum team working with a leader, Dr. Barb Hooper, and a group of therapists who have expressed a commitment to diversity since our very first meeting.”
