The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany.
__________________________________________________________________

February 16, 2020

Dear friends,

Ash Wednesday is now less than two weeks away.  It's hard to imagine that we have nearly circled back to this time on the calendar again.  As the Church prepares to enter into this Great Fast, I encourage you to consider what your Lenten practice will be.  Most of us automatically, from years of conditioning perhaps, think of what to give up for Lent, and this is fine, so long as what we have given up reminds us to direct our attention toward God and God's relationship with us.  But I would encourage you to also consider what you might add to your life during Lent that will draw you closer to God.  During this season in which we spiritually journey with Jesus toward Jerusalem and the Cross, we sacrifice in an effort to remind us of our own mortality, our own death.

I can't help but recall Ash Wednesday two years ago, a day that also landed on Valentines day.  That was the day when 17 young people were massacred at their school in Parkland.  It was the day when the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida youth community lost one of our leaders.  That was a very dark Lent for me and for many across our nation.  But out of that horrific Ash Wednesday new life has emerged.  Young people who have engaged their community in ways that many of us have never seen, have challenged us to be more authentic, and to say what we mean and to do what we say.  What is your challenge this Lent?  I ask you to spend some time praying about what God might be asking you to either give up or to add to your life, that will help you to draw closer to God's presence.

Please join us for Holy Eucharist with the imposition of Ashes on Wednesday, February 26 at either 6:30am, 12 noon, or 7:30pm.  Immediately following the 6:30am service I will be walking to the Flossmoor Metra Station and distribute ashes to the commuters there.  If you would like to join me for that, please reach out and let me know.  It is a great way for us to step outside of our comfort zones and to be a visible presence in our community.  In the meantime, let us enjoy this last week and a half of Epiphany when we bask in the glory of Christ's light.

Grace and peace,
Fr. Jeremy

Good people of St. John's: Our parish has been blessed recently with some lovely guests and visitors. It's never easy being the new person in a room full of folks who know each other.  Let's help them put some names with some faces by wearing our name tags. If you need a new name tag, or never had one to begin with, shoot Sarra an email and one will be created for you.
Help us sing our praises to the Heavenly Father by joining the St. John's choir.

Now is the perfect time to give it a try because we need more singers! Currently we rehearse only before the 10 a.m. worship service.

For more information (or to enlist), reach out to Mary VanSwol or Betsy Elliot.
We're mighty grateful to everyone who's donated much needed items to PADS so far. If you haven't had a chance, we will still be collecting items until April 5. Share the wealth, show the love.

O God, the strength of all who put their trust in you: Mercifully accept our prayers; and because in our weakness we can do nothing good without you, give us the help of your grace, that in keeping your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Recovery & Healing Ministry

As of February 5 we have begun studying The Wounded Healer by Henri Nouwen.

It is not completely necessary to purchase the book in order to participate in the group but it is helpful. If you plan to purchase the book, and, if you are able, we would love to have an extra copy or two for any drop-in guests that may join us in the future.

The Recovery & Healing Ministry meets on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m in the Guild Room.  All are welcome to join us, as we explore the addictive and co-dependent nature of Western society and seek to find recovery and healing that only comes through Spiritual transformation.

Pastoral Care & Hospital Visits
One of the most important aspects of ministry is visiting with those who are ill.  If you or a family member or friend are hospitalized, please be sure to contact the Parish Office at (708) 798-4150 as soon as possible to let us know.  It used to be that hospitals would notify clergy of parishioners who have been admitted.  With HIPPA laws as they now are, hospitals are NOT allowed to contact us anymore.  If you are in the hospital, or are in need of pastoral care, Fr. Jeremy wants to visit you, but he cannot do so if no one tells him that you are in the hospital. Please make this a part of your family's emergency plan, to have someone contact the church.  Thank you for your assistance.
The Fine Print
The weekly e-vangelist is distributed (usually) on Thursdays via e-mail subscription.  You may subscribe by submitting your request (including your e-mail address) to office@mysje.org.

If you would like to submit material for the weekly e-vangelist, please e-mail to office@mysje.org.  Or you may phone the parish office at 708-798-4150.  Please limit announcements to 100 words or less.  Graphics or photos may be submitted and will be included at the editor’s discretion.  The deadline is Noon on Thursday.
