February Update

Following is a brief update on what the Coalition for Children Affected by AIDS' Members are doing, what we are reading and where we are meeting in February.  

Member Highlights

In the lead up to the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Challenges to Women’s Global Health on Wednesday, February 5th, the Coalition signed on to a joint media statement, highlighting support for the need to end the Global Gag Rule and urging Congress to pass the Global HER Act.
 
In her role as Senior Program Officer of International Programs at the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Coalition Chair Lisa Bohmer recently published a blog on Understanding Place Based Strategies to Strengthening Early Childhood Development.
 
EGPAF President & CEO Chip Lyons published a recap of ICASA on LinkedIn highlighting both gaps and progress in efforts to reach children and adolescents affected by HIV/AIDS.
 
Coalition Learning Associates Amy Solgrove and Kathleen Powis recently published an article highlighting their findings from using UNAIDS estimates to calculate the share of each country in the global total of children who are HIV-exposed and uninfected. 

FCAA recently launched a video series of grantmakers, including Coaliton Chair Lisa Bohmer, discussing what it means to be an HIV funder at this moment in time.

Program Support

Improving HIV Service Delivery for Infants, Children and Adolescents: A Framework for Country Programming from UNICEF represents strategies to address the bottlenecks across the continuum of care for infants, children, and adolescents.
 
Circle of Hope: Using faith-based community outreach posts to increase HIV case finding, linkage and retention on treatment in urban and rural settings in Zambia has recently been identified as a PEPFAR Solution for areas in urban and rural Zambia.

Scaling Up Place-based Strategies to Strengthen Community Early Childhood Systems provides insight into how communities are strengthening community early childhood systems supporting children and caregivers.

A Caregiver Stories booklet has been developed with young people and families in the READY+ programme to provide information and ideas to support conversations with children and young people about HIV.
 
Women Deliver is looking for 300 young advocates (age 15 – 28) for its Young Leaders Program, which connects to the platforms, people, and resources to amplify their influence. Applications are open until March 13 at 11:59 PM ET.

Community Highlights

The Trump Administration released its budget proposal for Fiscal Year (FY) 2021. The significant cuts to U.S. contributions to global health programs including PEPFAR and the Global Fund resulted in feedback, such as this from Health Gap, from the community.

African Multi-Site 2-Year Neuropsychological Study of School-Age Children Perinatally Infected, Exposed, and Unexposed to Human Immunodeficiency Virus found that - after controlling for age, sex and certain socioeconomic and family factors - participants with HIV had poorer performance on cognitive ability, motor function and attention tests compared to participants without HIV.

Results from the Association of maternal antiretroviral use with microcephaly in children who are HIV-exposed but uninfected (SMARTT): a prospective cohort study showed that children who are HIV-exposed but uninfected with microcephaly had lower mean scores on neurodevelopmental assessments at age 1 and 5 years and a higher prevalence of neurodevelopmental impairment than those without microcephaly. 

Friends of the Global Fight has published an Investment Case for US support to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria - A Smart, Lifesaving U.S. Investment in 2020 as well as an Infographic - What Does $1.56 billion buy?

CHANGE produced a policy and research brief on Trump's Global Gag Rule.

Funding for sexual and reproductive health and rights in low- and middle-income countries: threats, outlook and opportunities, a report, commissioned by PMNCH, takes stock of current and potential future investments in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), to inform discussions on how to ensure adequate support.

Convenings

On January 22, the Kendeda Fund and the CEFM and Sexuality Working Group convened stakeholders dedicated to advancing adolescent girls’ rights to tackle the root causes of child, early and forced marriage and unions (CEFMU). The event highlighted key takeaways from the Tackling the Taboo report and other evidence and learning.

The 23rd International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2020) will be held July 6-10, 2020.  Help to form their program, including abstracts, the Global Village and Youth Programme, pre-conferences and more. Abstract submissions are open now through January 14.  Our colleagues at FCAA are partnering with the Levi Strauss Foundation on a funder networking reception.

HIV2020: Community Reclaiming the Global Response is scheduled to take place in Mexico City, July 5-7, 2020, and will run concurrently with the first half of the international AIDS conference. Registration is now open.

The IPSCAN European Regional Conference will be held on June 22-24, 2020.
