CITY FIELDS OF FEARLESS FLOWERS

Newcastle celebrates International Women’s Day 2020

"Fearless Flowers” is a community project and annual event facilitated by city gallery Timeless Textiles to support the “Pink Meets Teal” initiative, raising much needed funds for ovarian cancer research.

For its special 10th anniversary this year the project will be held across the city.

So many flowers made by the Wednesday Makers group
During the first week of March some our city centre’s heartfelt destinations will be sprinkled with bunches of fibre art flowers as part of this year’s Timeless Textiles led initiative FEARLESS FLOWERS 2020.

WIlma Simmons, Co-ordinator of the Wednesday Group at Timeless Textiles Gallery says  “There are two reasons for its existence – one is to raise funds for very worthy community programs  for International Women’s Day each year and the other is to build a community around Timeless Textiles where people can feel very comfortable and welcome to sit and enjoy each other’s company and create".

The hand worked flowers have been made by the Wednesday Group, who have created over 2000 textile flowers. This group has been meeting ever Wednesday  over the last 12 months for this year’s International Women’s Day event: Fearless Flowers.

As well fabric flowers have also been made from  recycled materials sourced and donated from local independent businesses (a group known as the Makers & Traders of Newcastle) including recycled aprons from Estabar cafe, felt homewares off-cuts from Make Space, menus from Momo Wholefood and paper offcuts from Monsoon Living.

Between Sat 29th February and the 7th March windows and shops throughout the city will swell with beautiful displays of these artful flower bunches. You will be able  to wander and explore the Fearless Flower walk.

A People’s Choice competition will be held to decide who wins the best display (with a prize giveaway of an intimate dinner for 2 from Subo).
The event culminates on  International Women's Day, 8th March with the 2020 Fearless Flower Market  held from 10.30-12pm at Timeless Textiles Gallery.

All of the Fearless Flowers we will sold and some art works will also be auctioned on the day.  All proceeds from this market and  auction will support the Funding fairness for Ovarian Cancer, Pink Meets Teal initiative, raising money to support Ovarian Cancer research (Nikola Bowman at Hunter Medical Research Institute)

Around 1000 Australian women die to ovarian cancer each year. Funding will assist research into improving the screening tests and better treatment options currently available in Australia
