Tuned In London
Tuned In London presents a year of concerts that invite audiences to reflect on the movement of people around the world, people who up sticks for a multitude of reasons, and head to lands unknown, marking the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower Ship leaving Rotherhithe's shore, captained and crewed by Rotherhithe residents. East and West African music, Kurdish and Syrian traditions, continent-crossing Flamenco and much more are a feature of this first season in the year that will continue to explore these themes.
FLAMENCO FUSION - LA LEO POWER, PABLO DOMINGUEZ and ALEJANDRO BENITEZ
Thu 30th Jan, 7.45pm (doors 7pm)
City Hope Church, Drummond Road, Bermondsey
A fabulous evening of the sounds of Southern Spain: the roots of flamenco are thought to have emerged in the Punjab from where centuries ago a large exodus of people, many of them artists and musicians, dispersed to other lands. Andalusia, centuries later, is where this gypsy art has evolved to become what it is today, with its strong Moorish, Castilian and Sephardic Jewish influences. Cadiz, home to this trio, is a port town that has seen people leaving to go to the Americas, and sometimes returning, bringing new rhythms and instruments. "Gaditana del año", Cadiz Citizen of the Year 2017, for her contribution to the art, La Leo Power sings with Pablo Domínguez (guitar) and Alejandro Benítez (bass) to reveal a mesmerising mêlée of rhythms that connect with other World Music genres.

OLCAY BAYIR
Wed 12th Feb, 7pm (doors 6.30pm)
Finnish Church, Albion St, Rotherhithe
Of Kurdish origin, Olcay Bayir's music crosses boundaries in evocative and heart-stoppingly beautiful ways. Opera-trained, she was born on the Turkish side of the Syrian border, and her soul is rooted in the deeply-emotional music of Anatolia, home to many peoples: Turks, Kurds, Armenians and Arabs, many of whom have been displaced from the lands of their forefathers. Olcay, "one of the finest, most intriguing singers on the British world music scene" The Guardian, with now two acclaimed albums to her name, returns bringing her exquisitely clear voice that defines her original repertoire, combining jazz, folk and neo-classical with Mesopotamian and Anatolian tradition.

RAPASA NYATRAPASA OTIENO
Thu 5th Mar, 7pm (doors 6.30)
Finnish Church, Albion St, Rotherhithe
Rapasa is a singer songwriter & great advocate of traditional music. He plays many East African indigenous instruments, his principal love being the Nyatiti, a beautiful lyre of the Lüo community, whose people now live along the Kenyan shores of Nam Lolwe (Lake Victoria), from where he hails. His music, steeped in heritage, is a journey, that follows the music of the Nyatiti as his ancestors migrated with it along the great waterway that is the Nile, drawing a likeness to those who set sail aboard the Mayflower and headed seaward from our own riverside community.

IYATRAQUARTET: Album Launch Special!
Wed 6th May, 7.45pm (doors 7pm)
City Hope Church, Bermondsey
“one of the most exciting new music groups around”, iyatraQuartet have captivated audiences with their original, boundary-bending music for violin, cello, bass clarinet and percussion, flavoured with “dizzy Balkan revelry” and hints of plainchant and Indian raga. They dream up pieces of acoustic music and songs each as unclassifiable and varied as the last. In this Mayflower anniversary year, their name is apt: 'iyatra' is 'travel' or 'pilgrimage' in Hindi. Here they launch their second album “Break the Dawn”. Join them to break this album dawning.

Applications are now open on our website for the 2020-21 cohort of Team Teach, London Music Masters’ postgraduate qualification focussing on group instrumental teaching, in partnership with Birmingham City University (BCU).
Team Teach is a one-year course that will equip teachers with the essential and practical skills needed for the demands of group instrument teaching. Starting with a full week of workshops, seminars, discussions and social events at the end of August 2020, teachers will join a team of likeminded professionals with a wide range of experience, giving them the opportunity to share ideas, encourage and inspire one another. They will be supported by an experienced mentor who will work closely with them throughout the year as they develop their practice. At the end of the course, students will receive a Level 7 (PGCEi) qualification, which is accredited by BCU, plus a year of ongoing CPD and networking opportunities at no additional cost. At present, we are looking for string teachers to join the cohort, but will be widening this to other instruments in future years.
Please take a look at the e-brochure or visit our website for more information, including course structure and focus, cost, bursaries and music hub / employer discounts available. We are currently offering a 20% off early bird discount, which can be combined with any other bursaries or discounts for which an applicant may be eligible. As a charity, we may also be able to consider additional financial support for exceptional candidates, and we can support travel and accommodation costs for applicants outside of London.
