Meeting minutes:
Volunteer Fair Saturday 15th Feb and Free Tree Giveaway

Volunteer Fair for Saturday

16 organisations who want volunteers will be dotted around Racquets

There will be 1,000 trees / whips from Hartwell Nurseries which will be delivered on Friday. Cost to Thame Trees was £500 which is part of the money from our generous sponsors.

The Organisations need to be here from 10am for set up, bring all their information they need to attract volunteers and to help generally.

Tim Newell needs contact details for Thomas, Laura and who has agreed to take the trees after the Volunteer Fair.

Robin from Morton needs a volunteer planting party, half term would be a great time for the kids to help!! Once we have a date / dates confirmed send out a Social Media post to bring the kids along - need time and date and add contact details for Tim Newell.

The saplings are bare rooted, which doesn't involve plastic pots. People will bring containers to put them in, along with the compost from Hartwell Nurseries.

Some of the tree varieties are:
Hawthorn whips x 500 6 types of hedge trees and 16 larger ones
Common Hazel
Dog Rose
Wild Cherry - 5
Silver Birch
Acer Campestre - 5
Rowan - 4

More trees are coming from other people who have been nurturing whips and trees including Chinese Polonias which are flowering ornamental trees.

#Thame Trees do not have any rules with regards to which trees need to go where, but the individual areas / gardens may have rules that can be planted. The Woodland Trust are native trees and the trees that will be planted in public areas will be in accordance with the Town Council and the Thame Green Living Plan.

Laura to invoice SYLO Associates for their donation towards the project, their 15 trees have already been delivered for distribution.

Laura organising a poster to ask people take photos and tag #ThameTrees when they are planting them.

300 whips already allocated to Cuttlebrook along with several of the Thame allotments.

Can people plant them within the time they need to be in the ground / pots?

Planting parties are being arranged around town over the weekend, weather permitting. Email need to be sent to the individuals who said they would like to attend.

Protection from rabbits and deer - Luci Electric money to be allocated to this as well as the trees. They are the main sponsor for the Project. Need to ensure that their contribution goes across the board. Majority of the money will go possibly go towards the trees to be planted in public areas once the Thame Council, the Green Living Plan and John Morris decide the areas to be planted in November. They have already have a plan where they should go.

Jo to provide information about the trees that people are talking away.

Thame Trees are going to try and get the free trees from the Woodland Trust for the November planting season.

Matt from FSS will be along to see what's going on.

Other business:

OX9er's have taken on Thame Tidy 18th April 2020 completely including talking to Moreton and Tetsworth. Equipment Bank has hi-viz jackets and litter pickers.

Thame Carnival - New event lead, Matt Bowler. They are already asking for marshals. Still need sponsors!!

Next 21st Century meeting - Thursday 19th March 2020 12 noon at Racquets

21st Century Thame is running a Volunteer Fair where we are giving away free Trees !

Venue : Racquets Fitness Centre
Date : Saturday 15th February 2020
Time : 12noon to 4pm
Why : To give Thame people the opportunity to talk to many local great organisations that need more volunteers

The groups who are coming :

21st Century Thame, Thame Carnival, Thame Trees, Thame Youth projects group, Thame Art Crawl & Taste of Thame, Thame Museum, Red Kite Family Centre, Oxfam shop, Thame and District Day Centre, Scouts, Music in the park, OX9ers, XR, Girl Guiding, Sustrans

What we are also doing is giving away 100s of tree completely free of charge. #ThameTrees is a project of 21st Century Thame where we have pledged to plant 500 trees this year. We have over 500 trees arriving ready fo give away at the Volunteer Fair. These trees will be mostly bare root 'whips' which will need planting before the end of March. They are hedge trees - so they can become a hedge or single small trees. All ideal for Thame gardens. Residents will be able to take away upto 20 trees to plant about 4m of hedge totally free of charge.

So, we are wondering if you could help us promote this event - are you part of one of the resident's associations ? Could you deliver some leaflets to your neighbours - especially those without trees in their gardens ? Could you chat with your neighbours and make sure that they are aware of the free tree giveaway ?

The trees we are giving away are Crataegus Monogyna, Corylus avellana, Prunus spinosa, Ligustrum vulgare, Rosa (o) canina, Viburnum opulus.
