Sojourner Truth: A Tale of Two Statues
As part of Black History Month Kingston, the Kingston Midtown Arts District is partnering with Harambee and MyKingstonKids to bring to our community two world-renowned artists who are creating statues of Sojourner Truth.

This will take place after the 2nd Annual Sojourner Truth Life Walk, which highlights parts of the legendary abolitionist Sojourner Truth's life including her escape route to freedom. This walk begins in Port Ewen and will include brief informative stops along the way. It will end at Kingston's Old Dutch Church with a live reenactment of Truth's famous “Ain’t I a Woman” speech by Deborah Zull.

Following the Walk will be an artists' presentation by Meredith Bergmann and Vinnie Bagwell. Each of these talented sculptors have been commissioned to create larger-than-life sculptures of Sojourner Truth. Ms. Bergmann's statue will be installed in Central Park and Ms. Bagwell's statue will be at the entrance to Walkway Over the Hudson in Highland. They will give a slide presentation and talk about their research into Sojourner Truth's life, their monumental artworks, and the power of art to tell our stories.

This free and open to the public event will take place in the historic and beautiful Old Dutch Church, across the street from the Ulster County Courthouse in Kingston, New York, at 4:00-5:00 pm on February 22, 2020.

Meredith Bergmann of Connecticut
Vinnie Bagwell of Yonkers, NY

We are excited to welcome these two important artists to Kingston. We hope you will participate in all or part of this dynamic day honoring the life of Sojourner Truth. Thanks to Black History Month Kingston, we will have the opportunity to know more about Sojourner Truth and celebrate her life.

A festive reception will follow at 5:00 pm courtesy of the Kingston Midtown Arts District.

Sojourner Truth's life serves as a beacon of light and hope for all that desire fairness, equality, and respect for all people. Come learn more about this larger-than-life person from American history and our local history. We hope to see you there!
