Message from the Principal

Dear Emerson Community,
Welcome to the month of February! Next week we will celebrate the 100th day of school, which is an opportunity to reflect and be proud of our Emerson Scholars for the hard work and perseverance they have shown this school year. Our February All School Meeting is this Friday at 8:30 am. Come join us and hear more about the kickoff of Rainbow Fridays, which will celebrate diversity and inclusion at Emerson. Then on Saturday, we hope you will join in the fun at the PTA Pancake Breakfast.

We are also excited that February is Black History Month. Ms. Lily, the Family Engagement and Equity Coordinator, has been working with the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who would like to enter the district Oratorical Competition, which honors Black history and culture. Mark your calendar for Friday, February 28, at 8:30 am, when we will preview the student Oratorical presentation at the Black History Month Assembly. If you would like to participate in some local events and exhibits during Black History Month, here is a link to explore: https://tinyurl.com/uu2abrw

You may be following the news and know that there are now confirmed cases in the Bay Area of the coronavirus. Last week, we sent a letter home to you from the Alameda County Public Health Department and the County Office Superintendent of Schools. The advice given is to monitor your student’s health and keep them home when they have a fever, and for an additional 24 hours after it breaks. We will continue to encourage and allow students to wash their hands throughout the day, including prior to eating lunch. We will also clean hard surfaces and use the district approved cleaning products. Please work with your children to teach them to wash their hands as much as possible.

Finally, if you are considering the spring Equity Study Circle, you still have time to sign up.  Classes begin on February 22. This is an excellent opportunity to build relationships with Emerson staff members and parents while learning from an amazing educator, Ms. Pamela Harrison- Smalls. You can pick up a flyer in the office or find more information at bit.ly/equitycircle.

Once again, thank you for your support and dedication to our outstanding Emerson community.

Sincerely,
Jana Holmes
