Thought for the Week
Monday 10th February 2020

This term at The Gryphon School, Year 7 students have been thinking about miracles – what are they? What are some examples? What purpose do they have?

One student, when asked for an example of something they considered to be miraculous, responded with ‘the world.’ When asked what they meant they replied that when they looked at the world and thought about the beautiful plants, the different animals and the amazing things on the planet that it was a miracle that it was all here.

During this time when we can see the challenges facing our planet it reminds us of the duty that we have to care and look after it. The concept of stewardship and our responsibility for the natural world around us is something we can all respond to by considering questions such as what we can do? How we can help? What changes can I make?

We should be reminded that even small changes make a difference, and that by doing our bit to care for the planet together we can protect it for the future.

Part of a climate poem called ‘The Question’ by Theo Dorgan gives us food for thought and sums up the questions we should be asking of ourselves and those around us.

What have you done
with what was given you,
what have you done with
the blue, beautiful world?

Our blue, beautiful world truly is miraculous for many.

“And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.” Genesis 1:31 (NIV)

“We are at a unique stage in our history. Never before have we had such an awareness of what we are doing to the planet, and never before have we had the power to do something about that. Surely we all have a responsibility to care for our Blue Planet. The future of humanity and indeed, all life on earth, now depends on us.” David Attenborough
