The second webinar in the Canadian Section of The Wildlife Society's (CSTWS) 2020 Education Series will take place 1:00-2:00 pm central time on Monday, February 10.

Dr. Andrew Derocher will present a webinar titled Trouble at the Top: Polar Bears in a Warming Arctic.

Dr. Derocher will provide an overview of how polar bears became an iconic species of climate change and present some of the challenges that the species faces in a warming Arctic.  The talk will provide specific examples from across the Arctic that highlight the primary threats.  He will cover aspects of polar bear research, management, and co-management that illustrate past successes and failures along with future conservation options and challenges.

Bio: Since 2002, Andrew Derocher, Ph.D. has been a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. Dr. Derocher joined the University after 7 years at the Norwegian Polar Institute as a research scientist studying polar bears in Svalbard and western Russia. His research over the last 36 years has focused on the ecology and conservation of polar bears. His current research is focused on understanding the effects of climate change on polar bears. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers on polar bears and a member and past chair of the IUCN/SSC Polar Bear Specialist Group. He co-authored the 2018 COSEWIC status report on polar bears.
