Dear <<First Name>>,

It a very busy January in the Campaign and we would like to make a big shout for all of those who came to the last Liffey cycle protest and those who have signed the petition to trial a cycle path along the quays this summer. Almost 5,000 signatures so far, so if you haven't signe it yet, and keep spreading the word.

Our next Public Meeting will be on Monday 9th of March and we are pinning down the details of it. If there's any topic you would like us to focus on, or if you have any speaker in mind, do give us your suggestions.

Happy Cycling!

Council Acts After Campaign Highlights Hazardous Roads

In response to Dublin Cycling Campaign highlighting multiple reports of cyclists suffering injuries in slips and falls, Dublin City Council has taken actions to help protect people cycling in the city. Dublin Cycling Campaign gathered data on over 120 slips and falls across Dublin in late January and submitted them to the council last weekend. Three days later, the total number of falls reported to the campaign is now over 200. More details here.

Thank you to everyone who reported a slip or fall to the campaign, or who shared the reporting form. Without a strong response from the cycling community in Dublin, we would not have been able to get the council to take action.

What Do The #GE2020 Manifestos Say About Cycling?

All of the political parties have published their manifestos ahead of #GE2020, and Martina Callinan of Galway Cycling Campaign & Cyclist.ie has gone through each one to see where each of the parties stand on cycling.
At last, we’ve got all the party #GE2020 manifestos. We’re judging promises against our 10 Asks to Make Cycling Better and Safer for All. Our priorities for everyday cycling are funding, infrastructure, and resources.

Round the World Cyclists Try Ireland First!

An intrepid dutch couple, planning a round the world cycling trip, decided that cycling around Ireland's coasts was the best possible preparation! Check out their mad Irish journey in this recent post from the latest EuroVelo newsletter.  There are some wonderful images, as well as instances of Irish hospitality, and a straightforward tip at the end to 'cycle with the prevailing wind' if at all possible!

Road Safety Authority Endorses Cyclist.ie calls for Investment in Cycling

Brian Farrell of Ireland's Road Safety Authority, has written a thoughtful article in the Independent newspaper, following on from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) report on cyclist deaths throughout Europe, and Ireland's particularly poor performance in this area from 2010 to 2017.

The article could have been written by a cycling advocate in that it calls for greater investment in safe segregated cycle routes, and recognises the poor conditions for cyclists on Irish roads.  But this article comes from the RSA following numerous meetings and lobbying by cycling advocates from Cyclist.ie over the past number of years, emphasising the increasing dangers for cyclists and pedestrians on many Irish roads. This continuous lobbying proves that a difference can be made!  Cyclist.ie, of which Dublin Cycling Campaign is the leading member, is an amalgam of over 20 groups in an Irish network of cycling advocacy groups.
Check out the Independent article, and see how it conforms to a number of our 2020 Election Asks outlined here.

Protests and Petitions Keep Pressure on Liffey Cycle Route

More than 250 people attended the Liffey Cycle protest on Sunday 26th January, which was organised by Dublin Cycling Campaign. Along with the Liffey Cycle protest, an online petition to trial the LIffey Cycle Route has been gaining massive traction. And a trial of the Liffey Cycle Route could go ahead this summer, according to Dublin City Council executives, but would require private motor traffic to be banned from some sections of Dublin’s Quays.

The topic was discussed at February’s City Council meeting after a major protest and an online petition highlighted people’s frustration at the ongoing delays to the Liffey Cycle Route.

Dublin Cycling Campaign is currently planning the next Liffey Cycle Protest. If you would like to be involved in organising these protests, or our general campaign for the Liffey Cycle Route, please send an email to liffeycycle@dublincycling.com expressing your interest to get involved.

Campaigning Moves up a Gear with the Support of Dropbox

There was a real sense of excitement at the official launch of Dropbox’s support of Dublin Cycling Campaign on 23rd of January. Over 100 invitees attended the event in Dropbox’s Hatch Street European HQ - mainly senior level representatives from many of the largest tech companies in Ireland. The consensus was that Dublin is ripe to become a seriously cycle-friendly city, but it needs leadership and - crucially - a stepping up of the cycle campaigning work led by the Campaign.

If the company you work for might consider supporting Dublin Cycling Campaign’s advocacy work to make the capital a safe and attractive place for cycling for all ages and abilities, we would love to hear from you!
