Welcome to 3 Point Thursday!

Each week I'll send you the three most compelling ideas, facts, studies and/or products related to nutrition, health and wellness that I have to share.

Winter can feel heavy..

So today, I want to keep it light, fresh, sweet and juicy.. so let's talk about FRUIT!

  • Grapefruit
February is National Grapefruit month!

The grapefruit is a hybrid of the pomelo and the sweet orange, which originated in Barbados, and was brought to Florida in the early 1800's by the Spanish.
This tart treasure has massive health benefits. So many, there's been a diet entirely dedicated to it for 80 years. Like all fad diets, participants of the grapefruit diet end up losing weight because it is an improvement from the way they had been eating, though it's unnecessarily limiting. Why would we limit ourselves to just one amazing plant food when we have access to hundreds?

Alas, we can see why the grapefruit won this "honor": It's super low in calories and super high in nutrients, like most fruits and veggies.
But grapefruit is VERY low in calories and VERY high in nutrients, including fiber and 15 essential vitamins and minerals.

High levels of Vitamin C make it a massive immunity booster, it's been shown to improve heart health, reduce the risk of kidney stones, suppress appetite, improve the condition of our skin - and it even comes with its own biodegradable wrapper!

  • Grapes
While there's no specific month that the grape is officially recognized, we can celebrate its benefits every month.

I always think of grapes as "nature's candy". They are sweet and delicious and we really can eat them like candy without the damaging effects of actual candy.
The only sugar found in grapes comes with giant health benefits in the form of polyphenols and other antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. In fact, 1600 beneficial plant compounds have been found in grapes! - all that contribute to optimal mind-body function.

One specific polyphenol that grapes contain a uniquely high amount of is called resveratrol.
Resveratrol has been studied quite a bit and been found to be highly protective against heart disease and cancer as well as helpful in lowering blood sugar, regulating inflammation in the brain and body and it's an effective anti-aging ingredient.

Grapes also contain high levels of vitamin C, beta-carotene, quercetin, lutein, lycopene and ellagic acid - all extremely powerful antioxidants as well.

Grapes are yet another amazing plant food to add to your shopping cart and enjoy their flavor, texture and health benefits, all year long.
