Lent Madness 2020

Lent Madness is a fun, engaging way for people to learn about the men and women who have inspired generations of Christians. The Rev. Tim Schenck and the Rev. Canon Scott Gunn, both Episcopalian priests, came up with this unique Lenten devotion by combining their love of sports with a passion for the lives of the saints.

The format is straightforward. Thirty-two saints (nominated by people world wide) are placed in a tournament-style, single elimination bracket. Each pairing remains open for twenty-four hours, and people vote for their favorite saints. Sixteen saints make it to the Saintly Sixteen, eight advance to the Elate Eight; four make it to the Faithful Four; two to the Championship and the winner is awarded the coveted Golden Halo. How does one get to know about the saints? The first round consists of basic biographical information about each of the thirty two saints and in subsequent rounds everything gets more interesting with quotes, legends and all manner of saintly information! Also, a booklet
called the Saintly Scorecard 2020 contains the bio information as well as scorecard to keep track of the winners from each round.

Of course, the entire notion of saints”competing” with one another is absurd - each one of them has already received his or her “golden halo.” As long as people are learning and having fun in the process, the eventual outcome is wholly irrelevant.

YES, Lent is a sacred time of preparation, penitence, self-reflection, and renewal, but there’s no reason a Lenten discipline need be dreary as we  “prepare with joy for the Paschal feast”.

Taking our faith seriously - but not ourselves - is the essence of Lent Madness, and as it continues to grow and evolve, what won’t change is the opportunity to meet some amazing people who have come before us in the faith. What we learn from the saints is that they, like us, are flawed human beings through whose lives Christ’s love shone brightly, If this love can shine bright in their lives, perhaps we too can be beacons of the GOOD NEWS.

Go on line….Lent Madness 2020 , sign up (totally free) and each Monday beginning February 17, you can vote for your favorite saint, read the celebrity blogs and laugh through the broadway show tunes with lyrics written especially for a particular saint. You can also order your Saintly Scorecard from this site.

In the Breezeway at St. Brigit’s, there is a large scorecard that will be updated each week with the winners leading up to the winner of the Golden Halo.

AND, St. Brigit was the runner up in 2015 winning the Silver Halo besting Francis of Assisi. The Silver Halo has only been given twice!

An Update from the Deacon

Thank you all for your prayers. I am doing much better now. My neurosurgeon told me the first month would be really difficult and he was right! The pain I had is gone and been temporarily replaced by post op fatigue and a tendency to choke on almost anything (that is probably 90 percent better now).  I’m not allowed to drive or even be in the car when the weather is bad in case of an accident. My next appointment is on March 24 and hopefully I can begin to wean out of the stiff collar. For most people it takes a year to fully fuse; in my case they expect it will take 2 years because of my age. Although the surgery went very well one vertebra is showing signs that it might fail and the screws might come out. If that happens (and we may not know for months) they will have to redo the surgery. So, my prayer request to all of you is to pray that the C4 vertebra begins to heal like the others now. Joan has been an absolute wonder woman and has cared for me every day and night. Our daughter lives less than a mile away and rough houses with our big black dog when she can. One of my graduated students comes by to take Spirit on long walks every so often (she lives in Littleton!!) and two of the neighbor kids walk the dog(s) 5 times a week. We are doing fine while we wait for healing to happen, or at least to begin to happen. Thanks for your continued prayers!
