Welcome back to St Andrew's for 2020. This year promises to be an exciting one as we celebrate the School’s 170th birthday and also begin the next stage of the Master Plan.

This week St Andrew's students from Years 1 to 7, plus some from the ELC and Reception, gathered at their first assembly to commence the year. During assembly the School's history was recounted and we began by acknowledging that this land on which our School stands has many stories to tell. These began with the Indigenous groups who inhabited and travelled through this area. The Kaurna people who lived on the Adelaide Plains but who also regularly met the Peramangk people for trade and ceremony. So, special events and ceremonies have happened around St Andrew’s since ancient times. And, each year the story unfolds as we each add to it with our experiences.

St Andrew’s Church was built in 1848 but it underwent several major additions in 1857, 1879 and 1886 which left nothing of its 1848 form or fabric. Nonetheless it was parishioners from the church who had the vison for St Andrew’s School. The Anglican Church in Walkerville was very active within the community at this time. St Andrew's School, a day school modelled on the early Pulteney Street School, opened in September 1850 to 'provide for the industrial classes a useful education'.

Can you imagine being one of the first students who stood on Smith Street - which was dirt - and looked down to the Torrens River, a mixture of farm paddocks, one acre house blocks and native bush? There were no street lights, no bridge over the Torrens, no pens and chalk and writing slates and definitely no cars to make drop off and pick up the traffic congestion of today. Below you will see a visual timeline that highlights some of the key events in the history of the School.

At assembly, each student was presented with a special badge to commemorate the School’s 170th year. Over the decades St Andrew’s has retained its core values of offering early years and primary education for families seeking an exceptional independent, co-educational School with Anglican values.

I hope that you will be able to celebrate our School's rich history with us at one of our special 170th anniversary events this year. We have our 170th Open Day coming up on Sunday 15 March when we will open the doors of the School to the community. We also have an exciting celebration planned for our 170th Anniversary Gala Ball on Saturday 27 June.

Around the School

Upper Primary

Last week our Year 6 and 7 girls took part in the Girl Gang Wellness Workshop as part of the School's integral work in supporting student wellbeing and positive mental health.

The workshop explored topics such as friendships, how to fuel your body with healthy food, yoga techniques to enable movement and calm the mind, and self exploration through art therapy.

It was an excellent workshop and a great way to start the school year. Thank you, Girl Gang facilitators!

170th Launched at St Andrew's

This week our 170th Anniversary was officially launched at an all of school assembly. Each student was presented with a 170th commemorative pin to mark this special time in our history.

Scholarships

The 2021 Bright Futures Scholarship is still open and applications are due by Friday 6 March. The Bright Futures Scholarship is available to students who will be in Year 3 in 2021. Families who are not already a part of the St Andrew’s School community are eligible to apply.

Master Plan Update

We're pleased to report that we're on track with planning for the commencement of Stage Two of our Master Plan.

We have undertaken in-depth consultation with key stakeholders and we've seen some exciting concepts for the new building which will be built where Kennion House currently stands. We can't wait to share them with you!

Stay tuned for the big reveal, it's sure to be impressive!

Old Scholars' Association

Plans are well underway for the first year reunion, which we anticipate will be held in April. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our recently graduated Year 7 students to reconnect and share their new high school experiences. Students who left the School in previous years will also be invited.

We are also in the thick of planning for our 5 and 10 year reunions which will take place after the first year reunion.

We extend an open invitation to all Old Scholars in our community to get involved with our ongoing efforts to stay in touch and continue to enrich the School with their efforts and experience!
