Trained To Cane

According to a South China Morning Post article dated January 28, 2020, eight women were hired in the Aceh province of Indonesia to mete out the punishment of caning women  - an attempt to observe Islamic law.

These women, called Algojo (executioner in Indonesian), represent the first female flog squad in Indonesia (see photo at top of this newsletter). They are "trained to cane" as Sharia officers!

The Aceh province, which was allowed to punish by caning in 2005, is the only Indonesian province with legal to do so by the government. It is an implementation of Sharia law.

So what is caning, why is it practiced and what nations still practice it?

Caning - What Is It?

• Judicially, it is a form of corporal punishment for breaking the law
• The punishment is applied publicly by use of a rattan cane
• In Aceh province, the lashes land between the shoulder blades of the guilty party
• Depending on the crime, the number of lashes with the cane can range anywhere from 5 to 150!
• Sometimes those being punished have to be hospitalized (see 3 photos below) 

• To bring shame and guilt upon the guilty 
• It is done for any of the following reasons - alcohol consumption or distribution, gambling, theft, display of affection outside of marriage, homosexual or lesbian acts, falsely accuse of adultery and child rape.

• Though practiced in a few other nations too, caning is practiced in the following Muslim majority nations - Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Brunei, Qatar, UAE, Libya and Maldives

Prayer Needs

1. Pray for those who have been or are about to be punished via caning. May they have revelation of Jesus as the "guilt" offering made to take away their shame and guilt  (Isaiah 53:10). Like Adam and Eve, may they see that God in His mercy can cover all their shame and guilt for disobedience to Him and that they cannot do it themselves (Genesis 3:7-11; 21).
2. Pray for all the executioners - that as they deliver punishment to the guilty that they would see and be convicted of their own sin (John 8:7-9).
3. Pray for the Aceh province, as it is 98% Muslim. Pray specifically for the Acehnese people group numbering 4 million, as it is 100% Muslim. They have been very instrumental in the spread of Islam.
4. Pray for the Muslim majority countries listed above - that the LORD would send them laborers of the harvest and that spiritual awakening would come to each of them.
