More Than a Fundraiser
On Saturday evening, March 7, at the W.O. Smith Music School, TYS will host a very special event. Spotlight on the Stage will include a performance by our Jazz/Rock Ensemble, as well as performances by a variety of other TYS groups and individuals who embraced our call for performers. Spotlight on the Stage is being held for two reasons: one, as a fundraiser for TYS, and, two (more importantly), because there is tremendous value in creating time and space for our students to share their own creations, and experience the excitement of interacting with a live audience.
As a professional musician, music teacher and TYS conductor, I feel strongly that students benefit from a well-rounded musical experience – one that includes the study and understanding of a broad base of genres, including jazz and classic rock, both of which are important parts of American culture. When our Jazz/Rock Ensemble meets to rehearse, our students really enjoy expanding on their classical training and performing these genres. They appreciate the opportunity to create with vocals, non-traditional instrumentation and amplification – all things that will be on display at Spotlight on the Stage.
It’s going to be an amazing evening. I hope you’ll join us – and experience the joy of being with our students as they showcase and embrace all that live music is and can be.
Gary Miller, Conductor, Jazz Rock Ensemble
P.S. Reserve your tickets here and invite your friends.

5 QUESTIONS WITH... Kevin Huston, Oboe
- When you're not at school or practicing, where can you be found? At home drawing and visiting antique shops.
- Who are your favorite musical artists? Vampire Weekend and Rufus Wainwright.
- What's your go-to snack or meal? Any sour candy.
- If you could teach a class at school, what would the subject be? I’d teach art, because art is one of my favorite past times.
- If you could travel anywhere, where would you go? I’ve never been out of the country, so somewhere outside of the U.S. I think Scotland would be very cool because of the castles and green scenery.

Tennessee Youth Symphony is a parent- and volunteer-led organization and WE NEED YOU. Our Board of Directors is losing several long-term members due to term limits, which means others must step up. While we will gratefully consider all Board applications, we are especially in need of individuals with expertise in digital marketing and finance. Can we count on you? Apply here.

GoFundMUSIC !
TYS' Musical Director, Mrs. Miller, recently shared that the largest of our ensembles - Youth Symphony - has outgrown our current music library. Said another way: Our talented Middle Tennessee students are now performing at a level beyond our music library holdings.
THE GOOD NEWS: TYS students' technical capabilities continue to grow and improve. This is a testament to all of the hard work of our conductors, guest artists, parents and students. Thank you, all!
THE BAD NEWS: Our program requires more advanced music, but our current budget doesn't allow for it.
A CALL TO ACTION: Our goal is to raise $1,500 by May. We need help from local businesses and organizations, and individuals LIKE YOU.
Please donate today - and share with family, friends and others who you think may lend their support. THANK YOU.

Our sincere apologies to Williams Fine Violins. We failed to include their latest ad in our December concert program. We are happy to share it now - and bring attention to their long-standing support of Tennessee Youth Symphony AND their new location at 204 Donelson Pike.
Thank you, Williams Fine Violins, for all you do for our organization. We are grateful.
