We were delighted to welcome Rio Ferdinand back to Child Bereavement UK for the filming of Rio And Kate: Becoming A Stepfamily which airs tonight, Monday 10 February, on BBC1.
The documentary follows on from BBC1’s 2017 documentary Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad which saw Rio talking to bereaved young people supported by Child Bereavement UK, who gave him tips from their own experience on how to talk to his young children about their mum who had died.
Tonight’s documentary, Rio And Kate: Becoming A Stepfamily explores the challenges as Rio’s fiancée Kate Wright integrates into the family and becomes a step-mum to his three children.
The couple join a discussion group at our Buckinghamshire bereavement service where some of the children and young people supported by the charity give Rio and Kate advice based on what helped them. Rio’s three children then take part in a group for bereaved young people at our East London service.
We are delighted that Rio, Kate, and the BBC are shining a spotlight on some of the issues that many widowed parents we support face around the complexity of parenting their bereaved children and step-children.
