GHYC November Newsletter

From the Commodore

I would like to thank the members and our sponsors for the support given to the Committee and Club over the past year. As we start into a new decade and with a new committee, there is still much work to be done. I would like to touch on a few areas where assistance to the committee from members would be very much appreciated. Please advise any of the committee members if you can help, even in a small way.
  • Health and Safety is very important to all of us and this year H&S will be represented on the main committee and will be spearheaded by Lee Miles. However, there are many diverse aspects to H&S whether it be craneage, on the water, training school, racing, etc, where an assist would be appreciated.
  • Social events and interaction are one of the enjoyable attributes of membership but like everything they have to be managed, organised and communicated. This year a Social Secretary will be appointed to the main committee but assists will be required to run the activities.
  • Glandore Classic 2020 will be held in July this year and is following on from the RCYC Cork 300 celebrations. A large contingent of visiting boats is expected and while there is an active sub-committee under the charpersonship of Sally Wyles, hands on deck will be required in the immediate lead up to and during the event. One of our members is generously supporting the Club as the main sponsor, however there are many other sponsorship opportunities available to local businesses. Please contact Sally for more info.
  • The Club expends a lot of money each year in maintaining and renewing our growing fleet of support boats. The Club is seeking a Powerboat Captain to assist in the utilisation and training of younger powerboat helms. These powerboat helms are an important aspect of all Club activities, without whom training and racing activities would not be possible.
  • The Club also recognises the importance of a secure IT platform. This year, an IT sub-committee under the chairmanship of John Williams is being established to ensure that our IT systems and procedures are robust and safe.
If you want to see a full list of roles and where assistance is required, click this link:
In between all of the above, I am sure we are all looking forward to getting on the water whether it be in our boats, dinghies, Squibs, Dragons or cruisers, so safe and enjoyable boating to everyone in the season ahead.

I look forward to welcoming you 'onboard' if you can help in anyway.

Thank you.

Membership Renewal Reminder

Don't forget to renew your membership as soon as possible. Here are the membership fees for 2020:

Primary Schools' Sailing Programme

This hugely popular programme will run as usual on weekdays from June 2nd to June 17th inclusive. Expressions of interest are sought from instructors who wish to volunteer for days and juniors who are competent as helpers. We will again be looking for one or two instructors to lead the programme.

This is invaluable experience for anyone who is considering an SI role in the future. Adult members with a powerboat ticket or higher are also most welcome to get involved if they want safety boat experience. Lunch will be provided.

Please contact Tim with any questions on vicecommodore@glandoreyc.com.

Fleet News

As the days begin to lengthen, it is time to stop procrastinating when it comes to preparations for the season ahead.  For those who attended the AGM, you will know that the membership fees were increased (the revised fees are shown above) and we will also be increasing the race fees. These have not been set yet as we are looking at budgets in order to help us decide.

We are also looking at what changes/improvements can be made going forward. For example, we are looking at ways to get more Squibs out racing - any ideas from sailors are very welcome, please email suggestions to the Squib Captain.  Another item we are considering, is whether we should organise more casual cruises. And the Dragons are looking at more racing outside the harbour, but this will require planning.

For the Dragon and Squib fleets, the Club would like to encourage those racers who are not members of the relevant associations - the International Dragon Association (IDA) and the National Squib Owners Association (NSOA) - to join up.  These associations do critical work and One-Design racing would not really be possible without their work, so they should be supported.

Now we just need to await an improvement to the weather…

ISA Sailing School

As is the Glandore tradition, the ISA summer courses went live on February 1st and they are selling fast. We've introduced a deposit and balance payment plan for the courses this year.

You can see details and dates of all the courses by clicking this link: ISA Schedule. To book your course, click here: https://pay.easypaymentsplus.com.

This year, we will also be continuing to raise the skill levels of our members, making the on-the-water activities safer and more enjoyable. We are offering a Rec 1 First Aid Afloat course for sailors and instructors at the Clubhouse on Saturday, April 11th (the day before the Spring Dinghy League begins). This course will be available on EPP from the week beginning February 10th.

A reminder also that we are now recruiting for Summer 2020.  Note that helpers and instructors should use the same form. Check your certificates to ensure you have what is required. If you need, or want to attend any supplementary courses, for example First Aid, contact Kevin by email at the address below and we can work to get this in place for you. Please remember that you must be Garda vetted to work at the Sailing School. Details are available at https://www.glandoreyc.com/jobs.

If you have any questions about courses, the booking process, job applications or supplementary courses, please contact Kevin Percy at Training@glandoreyc.com.

Survey Help Required
Katie O'Connor, a second-year Mechanical Engineering student, who was an advanced instructor at GHYC in 2019 has requested our help with a sustainability project she is doing. So if you have a few minutes to spare, please help out one of our own and the environment by completing the short survey below:

Tax Efficient Donation to GHYC

The Club has not done a fundraiser for some time and now as “An Approved Sports Body”, we have succeeded in getting approval from DTTAS for an “Approved Project“ as per Section 41 of the Finance Act 2002 and section 847A into the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997.

Any company, sole trader or self-assessed individual can now make a donation of €250 or more to GHYC and it will be treated as a trading expense for tax purposes. A Revenue Commissioner's approved receipt will issue. The scheme does allow for donations by PAYE workers but the benefit is to the Club alone and not the donor:

For PAYE taxpayers, the relief will be given on a “grossed-up” basis to the approved sports body, rather than by way of a separate claim to tax relief by the donor. In other words, the donation will be treated as having been
received by the approved sports body ‘net’ of income tax. For example, if an individual who pays income tax at the higher rate - 41% - makes a qualifying donation of €590 to an approved sports body, that body will be
deemed to have received €1,000 less tax of €410. The body will then be able to claim a refund of €410 from the Revenue Commissioners at the end of the year i.e. the amount of tax already paid by the taxpayer on the net sum of €590.”

The Club has been granted permission to collect €60,000 in donations for the purchase of permanently based equipment. We would like to thank our first donor who got in with a payment in time for the 2019 Tax Year! But there is no time limit. With the new website due in 2020, we hope to either incorporate this as a Donate button or alternatively as an item on EPP, but we will happily accept cheques, bank transfer etc.

Please contact the Tim with any query on vicecommodore@glandoreyc.com.
