Pushing Boundaries:
An Endurance Coaching Journal for Time-Crunched Professionals

“You must expect great things from yourself before you can do them." - Michael Jordan

Whew! February is upon us. I hope you are settling into your training, enjoying your easy days and challenging yourself on the hard ones. And trust me, it's not just you - the hard days really do feel BRUTAL this time of year, as you fight the urge to hibernate and decide to build your fitness instead. With a solid effort in your training, you are gaining a ton of mental and physical strength, which will indeed carry you during your races this year. Never. Give. Up.
This Week's Article: For Business Travelers

Endurance Training and Business Travel: Tips for a Happy Co-Existence

Continuing to follow a training plan while you’re on the road can help you combat jet-lag, have energy for client meetings, bond with co-workers, and more. You don’t need to stop training when you’re on the road, you just need to adopt a new mindset about your training.
What I'm Reading

I finally watched Brittany Runs a Marathon, and it was FANTASTIC! I laughed and cried, all while getting in a workout on my trainer. Any runner will have so much appreciation for this movie, as it is a highly accurate depiction of the highs and lows of running. Put it on your watch list! Watch with runner friends, or non-runner friends and get them inspired to run with you!

Here's an article about strength training that caught my attention this week, as I'm always so undecided about whether the high-weights-low-reps method is as effective for endurance as low-weights-high-reps (which takes so much longer). Spoiler alert - the latest research tells us that a 13-minute strength workout done to muscle failure was just as effective as a 70-min strength routine done to failure. I'll take it!

Hey Coach! I have a Question...
I'm trying a new thing. I'll be shooting a short (1-3-min) video to answer questions that I get from my athletes. Here's the first edition of "Hey Coach! I have a Question!" Let me know what you think, and send your questions to cortney@nwenergylab.com for me to answer in a future video.
