The attractions industry is constantly changing, utilising innovative technology and attempting to meet customer demand for new experiences.  We’ve compiled the latest visitor attraction trends to keep an eye on as we welcome a new decade.

2.  Florida’s tourism industry sets up PAC to fight John Morgan’s $15 minimum wage amendment on 2020 ballot

The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, which represents many of the state’s low-wage tourism employers, is preparing for a brawl with Orlando trial attorney John Morgan and other supporters of raising the minimum wage to $15.

3.  Reservations open this year for Disney's 'Star Wars hotel'

Not when 2021 brings us the new "Star Wars hotel" that so many fans have been waiting for from the Walt Disney World Resort. With the two-day, two-night cruise-style interactive experience debuting next year, many Disney and Star Wars fans figured that Disney World would have to start taking reservations for the new destination sometime this year.

4.  Closed attractions, shut restaurants, and a ‘ban’ on hugs: How Disney parks are dealing with the coronavirus

At the Tokyo Disneyland, guests have reportedly been advised that, due to the ongoing spread of a novel coronavirus, hugging is no longer allowed when it comes to the princes, princesses, villains and cartoon characters—Disney's “cast members”—that flit across the park.

5.  The Jack Rabbit, Seabreeze’s iconic coaster, turns 100 years old this year

IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. (WROC) — Tucked away in the northeast corner of Irondequoit is a piece of American history. 
The Jack Rabbit, a wooden roller coaster at Seabreeze Amusement park, turns 100 years old this year.

6.  Disney reveals new details about Avengers Campus that promise to ‘blow people away’

The new Avengers Campus promises to wow visitors with Spider-Man swinging across the sky, Captain America leaping from rooftops and Doctor Strange conjuring up magic spells when the new Marvel super hero land opens at Disney California Adventure.

7.  Disney Files Patent for New Ground Shaking Technology

After filing a recent patent, it appears that Disney is getting ready for a new ground-shaking experience. No, really, they want to cause the floor beneath your feet to shake.

8.  Hershey Entertainment & Resorts VP joins hospitality management advisory board

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Jane Woods LaFranchi, vice president, general counsel and secretary at Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company (HE&R) has joined the Penn State School of Hospitality Management (SHM) Industry Advisory Board.
 

9.  Carolina Beach Boardwalk Amusement Park is losing ground but plans on 2020 return

CAROLINA BEACH — Despite the rapid loss of empty real estate to set up shop, the Carolina Beach Boardwalk Amusement Park is planning on making its return to the beach town this summer.
 

10.  'Plenty of fun!' - New look for log flume at Pleasurewood Hills

With speculation on social media surrounding which ride it would be, the operators have now revealed that water ride Timber Falls will be "getting a new look" for when the park reopens in the spring.

11.  NetServ’s Tatvam solution helps Herschend Family Entertainment to deliver quality guest experiences

NetServ, a leading provider of customer feedback analysis, has announced that Herschend Family Entertainment is using its Tatvam solution to listen to and act on customer feedback.

12.  Parks! America, Inc. Reports Q1 Fiscal 2020 Results

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga., Feb. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Parks! America, Inc. (OTCPink: PRKA), today announced the results for its first fiscal quarter ended December 29, 2019.

13.  SeaWorld Orlando adds 21 more artists to Seven Seas Food Festival concert lineup

The theme park added several more artists to the event roster this week, including Hunter Hayes, Gretchen Wilson, Sean Paul and Vanilla Ice. 

14.  Walt Disney World Cancels and Modifies Numerous Nighttime Performances, Adjusts Resort Transportation Tonight Due to High Winds

Strong winds in the Orlando area has caused Disney to adjust or cancel many shows, dessert parties, and transportation services. The following is the current status given by Disney as current conditions allow.

15.  Who's headlining concerts this year at Florida's theme parks?

 Your calendar might tell you that it's early February, but theme park fans know that this is really the start of the concert season in Central Florida's theme parks. Busch Gardens, Disney World, SeaWorld, and Universal all host headliner concerts each weekend at this time of year, all included with park admission.

16.  Fire Breaks Out at Disneyland Near the California Amusement Park's Main Street

Disneyland visitors expecting fireworks saw a different kind of spark at the California theme park when a fire broke out near the Main Street firehouse.

17.  Dollywood Sevier County Resident Season Pass Special Offer

At a time of year when donations to the Sevier County Food Ministries tend to slow, Dollywood officials announced a special season pass offer for those who live or work in Sevier County, with a portion of the proceeds going to support the food ministry in this crucial time.

18.  Here's the latest on this new Disney coaster

The theme park giant filed a new notice of commencement, a document that signals the start of work, for the latest attraction at Magic Kingdom: Tron Lightcycle/Run coaster. The Tron coaster is inspired by the Tron Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland and puts riders behind two-wheeled Lightcycles that race the digital world from the "Tron" film series.

19.  Drayton Manor Park to close with Midlands set to be battered by Storm Ciara

Bosses at the Staffordshire attraction e already announced the closure of the popular venue in readiness for the arrival of what was forecast to be the worst storms since 2013.

20.  Efteling introduces a new restaurant concept: putting together a meal for 12.50 euros

De Efteling comes with a new restaurant concept. From now on, the self-service restaurant Panorama, located next to Vogel Rok, allows visitors to put together a meal for a fixed price. They choose a main course, a side dish and possibly a drink.

21.  Bobbejaanland joins forces with Nickelodeon

Bobbejaanland is entering into a partnership with children's channel Nickelodeon. From next season, visitors can meet famous characters from the TV channel in the park. The Flemish amusement park says this in a newsletter to subscribers.

22.  Some Experiencing Slimmed Down Version of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Due to Technical Issues

Though Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance got off to a rough start when it first opened at Disney's Hollywood Studios last December, around the the holiday season we started seeing more stable operations at this attraction, with most regular boarding groups being called before the early afternoon, and guests with backup groups able to experience the attraction before park close. 
 

1.  Gateway Arch sees fewer visitors than before major renovations

The number of people who visited the Gateway Arch last year was up 2% from the year before, but still well below the number of those who checked out the monument before the five-year, $380 million renovations.  The year before the renovations began the Arch drew 2.5 million visitors. Last year it drew 2.05 million. 

2.  Olympic and Paralympic Museum plans for May opening date in Colorado Springs

You’ve probably noticed the skyline of Colorado Springs changing as the new Olympic and Paralympic Museum takes shape. It’s set to open in May. 11 News got a tour of the museum for a sneak peek of what will be inside.  It’s a massive and unique building set next to America The Beautiful Park. The city is making changes to that area as well, hoping it becomes a tourist destination.

3.  Creative Works continues partnership with Urban Air on new Laser Tag concept

Creative Works, the theming company and attractions provider, has installed its new open-air laser tag concept at Urban Air Adventure Park in Knoxville, Tennessee.  Creative Works is pleased to announce the continuation of its partnership with Urban Air and has now installed its new open-air laser tag concept at a branch of the trampoline park franchise in Knoxville.

4.  France: Eiffel Tower closes amid fresh labor strikes

A new round of protests across France on Thursday has led to the closure of iconic sites like the Eiffel Tower, as French unions keep up the pressure on President Emmanuel Macron and his pension reform plans.  The protests were at their peak in December and early January, lasting for an uninterrupted seven weeks. Nonetheless, the French president's pension reform was passed by his Cabinet and has been brought before the National Assembly.

5.  Attia announced as Kid’s Space CEO at VIP event

Salman Al Hokair Holding this week held an evening event with many of its suppliers in the industry at which it formally celebrated the appointment of Mohamed Attia as CEO of its Kid’s Space division.  The dinner was held prior to the opening day of the Saudi Entertainment and Amusement Expo that closed after a successful run this week.

6.  VIDEO: First look inside Surrey’s new Central City Fun Park, with roller rink, bowling and more

An entertainment centre billed as “Metro Vancouver’s Largest Indoor Amusement Park” is set to open in Surrey, in 27,000 square feet of space near Pattullo Bridge and Scott Road SkyTrain Station.  Central City Fun Park will feature a roller skating rink, bowling, nine-hole miniature golf course, 65 arcade games, Hologate virtual-reality game, party rooms, a pizzeria and more, in the former SkyZone trampoline park space at 11125 124th St.

7.  Allevity Entertainment opening in Aberdeen soon

Allevity is a family entertainment center in Aberdeen that will be opening this month.  "Allevity Entertainment is seven attractions, three party rooms and a cafe," said Owner/General Manager David Novstrup.  Laser tag, ax throwing, mini bowling, and arcade games highlight Aberdeen's newest year round entertainment complex.

8.  Indoor amusement center in New Orleans East to open Sunday

A multimillion-dollar entertainment complex in New Orleans East is scheduled to open Sunday.  Optimus Entertainment is opening an indoor amusement center in a newly renovated, 42,000-square-foot retail outlet near New Orleans East Hospital and East New Orleans Regional Library. The outlet has been vacant since Hurricane Katrina. Investors put over $4 million into bringing it back into commerce, a news release said.

9.  Mario Kart VR London Site Finds A New Home In A Central Location

VR Zone, the VR arcade arm of Bandai Namco, this week launched the game at Namco Funscape in County Hall. Funscape is a long-running arcade venue located next to the London Eye and right in front of the River Thames. You could already play the game at the O2 venue, though this is a far more central location. As with other sites, the installation offers space for up to four players at a time.

10.  US$18m redevelopment focused on engagement at St Louis Holocaust Museum

The St Louis Holocaust Museum in Missouri, US, has announced a new US$18m (€16.4m, £13.9m) project to deliver a state of the art facility that triples its existing space, enhancing its ability to engage with visitors and the regional community.

11.  Topgolf Plans To Open Second Location In Charlotte

Topgolf Entertainment Group announced plans to open a second Topgolf venue in Charlotte, NC. The new location will open at the end of 2020 near UNC Charlotte, Charlotte Motor Speedway and Northlake Mall.  “We’ve been part of the Charlotte community for two years now and continue to see guests embracing the unique experience we bring to the city,” said Topgolf Chief Executive Officer Dolf Berle.

12.  The National Corvette Museum opens new exhibit and Corvette Plant rolls out 2020 Corvette

From a new exhibit opening at the National Corvette Museum to a new Corvette rolling off the lines at the Corvette Plant, there is a lot of exciting things happening in the world of Corvettes.  The museum teamed up with Tom Peters who is a retired Director of Exterior Design for the 8th generation of Sting-Ray Corvettes to put together the ‘Car-Toon Creatures, Kustom Kars and Corvettes: The Art and Influence of Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth' exhibit.

1.  More renderings released of 'America's largest indoor water park' in Round Rock

Kalahari Resorts and Conventions, home of what they bill as "America's largest indoor water parks," uploaded more renderings to its website of its upcoming location in Round Rock.  The "authentically African-themed" Wisconsin-based company announced its plans in 2016 to build its first property in Texas.

2.  Wet 'n' Wild will not reopen, owner confirms

On Friday, February 7, it was announced that Wet ‘n’ Wild won’t be open for operation this Easter.  A statement on the Wet ‘n’ Wild website reads: “Wet 'n' Wild will not be re-opening this year. We realise this will come as disappointing news to many people out there, and this has been a difficult decision to make.

3.  Blizzard Beach Water Park Closed Friday Feb. 7 Due to Predicted Cold Weather

Due to forecasted cold weather, Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park will be closed tomorrow, Friday, February 7th, 2020. Projected high temperatures are in the low 60’s.  As a reminder, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park is currently closed for refurbishment.  At the time of this post, Blizzard Beach is set to reopen on Saturday, February 8th at 10am.

4.  Wet’n’Wild Las Vegas hires Patrick White as New Director of Food, Beverage and Retail

Wet’n’Wild Las Vegas announced the appointment of industry veteran Patrick White as the water park’s director of food, beverage and retail.  White will oversee the overall direction of food, beverage and retail operations at Wet’n’Wild Las Vegas. His responsibilities include menu development, kitchen design based on elevated functionality, excellence in guest service and attaining food, beverage and retail sales and profitability goals.

1.  Cheyenne Mountain Zoo named world’s first ‘water neutral’ zoo

Running a zoo requires a lot of water, in fact millions of gallons every year. That’s why the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is cutting back on their water consumption and giving it back to local waterways.  The zoo has already cut its water use in half over the past five years. They use 16 million gallons every year, compared to the previous 30 million. The zoo is partnering with Trout Unlimted Winter Water Offset becoming the first water neutral zoo in the world.

2.  Woman attacked by tiger at Topeka Zoo speaks out for first time

For the first time, a woman attacked by a tiger at the Topeka Zoo is speaking out about the terrifying moments inside the cage.  On April 20th, 2019 Kristyn Hayden Ortega, a veteran zoo keeper, was attacked by a 7-year-old tiger named Sanjeev.

3.  DC Comics And LA Zoo To Host Joint Event Featuring Talks With Artists, Authors

Super heroes and wildlife will all be in one place at the Los Angeles Zoo this weekend.  The zoo is partnering with DC Comics to host the event, “Reading with Zoo-per Heroes at the L.A. Zoo.”  The fun-filled day starts off with a special naming ceremony for one of the zoo’s green and black poison dart frogs.

4.  Coronavirus lockdown disrupts food supplies for birds, animals in Wuhan Zoo

The coronavirus outbreak that has claimed over 630 lives has also badly affected the food supplies of birds and animals at a zoo in Wuhan, the epicentre of the epidemic that is wreaking havoc in China and abroad.  Since the outbreak in Hubei province in December, the entire province has been kept under lockdown by officials to prevent the virus from spreading human to human.  This lockdown has resulted in food shortages for the animals in the Wuhan Zoo.

5.  Watertown Zoo begins to execute on its strategic plan

Thompson Park Zoo Executive Director Lawrence Sorel, who is the latest in a long line of executive directors there, said one of his first priorities on the job was to develop a strategic plan. The last one adopted by the zoo board was made in 2005.  "So, clearly it was overdue," Sorel said. "You can’t make progress, you can’t know where you’re going until you set some kind of path in front of you."

6.  Oregon Zoo's Juno dubbed an official Harlem 'Globe-otter'

The Harlem Globetrotters will play two games in Portland Saturday, but before the big match-ups, slam-dunk star Zeus McClurkin made a trip to the Oregon Zoo to learn from another famous dunker.  McClurkin, who holds three Guinness World Records for his dunking skills, visited Juno the sea otter.

7.  Woodland Park Zoo's 2 hippos to leave Seattle later this year

Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo will soon be hippoless.  The zoo announced Thursday that it will soon begin the process of finding new homes for its two hippos, Water Lily (Lily) and Guadalupe (Lupe).  Lupe, who turned 20 in November, is a good age for breeding and has been recommended to do so by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

8.  In war-torn Yemen, zoo animals face daily struggle

Yemen's war makes life a daily struggle for millions of civilians, but creatures in the country's neglected zoos, including lions, leopards and baboons also face an uncertain future.  At the country's main zoo in Sanaa, the capital seized in 2014 by the Iran-backed Huthi militias who control much of the north, a man unloaded one of a dozen dead donkeys trucked in each day to feed 31 resident lions.

9.  Aquarium of Niagara joins Buffalo Zoo in Australian wildfire relief efforts

As Australia continues its long journey toward recovery after massive bushfires, the Aquarium of Niagara is joining forces with the Buffalo Zoo to support fundraising efforts and maximize the Western New York zoological community’s impact toward relief efforts.

4.  Wynn CEO: Macao closures costing up to $2.6M a day

The closure of its Macao properties because of the spread of coronavirus is costing Wynn Resorts Ltd. between $2.4 million and $2.6 million a day, CEO Matt Maddox said Thursday, adding that it’s too early to determine when the properties will reopen.
