Trump FY21 Budget Proposes Elimination and Cuts to Federal History-Related Agencies & Programs
On February 10, the White House released its budget request to Congress for fiscal year 2021, proposing devastating cuts to federal humanities and history funding. These include elimination of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, history and preservation programs at the National Park Service and federal K-12 history and international education programs. Joint Memorandum to OMB on Closing of NARA Seattle Facility
SAA and CoSA issued a joint memorandum to the Office of Management and Budget to oppose the sale of the National Archives and Records Administration’s (NARA’s) building in Seattle, Washington. The memo states, “We strongly recommend that the decision to close the facility be rescinded and that the recommendation [of the Federal Public Buildings Reform Board] be studied further, including asking for input from stakeholders and the public.” Read the CoSA/SAA memorandum.

The 2020 presidential caucuses and primaries are upon us, and SAA’s Committee on Public Policy has prepared a list of questions—based on SAA’s Public Policy Agenda—that we’ve posed to all the US presidential candidates. No responses to share yet, but we’re hoping that the campaigns will consider archives and records issues and also learn more about our important issues from our questions. Check it out! New and improved leader rosters are available now for all SAA committees, boards, task forces, working groups, and section steering committees. To view the new rosters: Navigate to the SAA group microsite and click on the "Roster" link, located just below the main title on each microsite. Sixty Inches From Center and Blackivists Lead Community Archives Event in Chicago
Senior editor Noor Shawaf and co-founder Tempestt Hazel of Sixty Inches From Center will discuss their work to archive the culture of Chicago's BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and women artists and spaces. Archivists Steven Booth from the National Archives and Stacie Williams from the University of Chicago Library, founding members of Blackivists, a collective of Black archivists who work with individuals and organizations to preserve Black Chicagoland memory and culture, will give an introduction to best practices in community archiving and steps to preserve family and neighborhood histories. Call for Proposals: Symposium on Emergency Planning in Libraries and Archives
Share your expertise and experiences at a symposium on emergency planning in libraries and archives, hosted by the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law Library and the Cardozo Law Library on July 10. Proposals are welcome on any part of the emergency and disaster planning process, from policy creation to implementation. A Google spreadsheet is available for those seeking collaborators. Submit proposals for 45- to 60-minute sessions by February 28.
Apply to the ARSC Research Grants Program
The Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) Research Grants Program supports scholarship and publication in the fields of sound recording research and audio preservation. Projects on discography, bibliography, historical studies of the sound recording industry and its products, and other subjects that may increase the public's understanding and appreciation of the lasting importance of recorded sound are encouraged. Review the grant guidelines and submit by February 29.
2020 James H. Bradley Fellowship
The Montana Historical Society Research Center presents the 2020 James H. Bradley Fellowship. This fellowship is awarded annually to graduate students, faculty, and/or independent scholars pursuing research on Montana history. Fellowships include a stipend of $3,000. Heritage Werks has established a Heritage Innovators Award. This $2,500 award will be presented to a current student or recent graduate who is pursuing innovation in the field of archival preservation. Learn how to apply by March 15.
54th Georgia Archives Institute
The Georgia Archives Institute will be held June 7–18, 2020, in Morrow, Georgia. Pam Hackbart-Dean will serve as principal instructor. The Institute includes classroom instruction, repository tours, and a three-day internship. Learn how to apply. Deadline: March 15.
Contribute to the MLA International Bibliography
The Modern Language Association is seeking new field bibliographers and applications for three-year fellowships for the MLA International Bibliography. The MLA International Bibliography database is an essential humanities research tool providing access to print and electronic books and articles published on modern languages, literatures, dramatic arts, folklore, linguistics, pedagogy, rhetoric, and writing studies. Field bibliographers record the bibliographic information of scholarly documents and define their subject, content, and form. Fellows submit at least 100 citations per year during a three-year commitment and receive a $500 stipend. Applications are due April 1.
