The Backyard Forager

Homemade is better than Hallmark.

In my house we made a lot of homemade gifts growing up. Not only because it saved money, but also because it was more personal and heartfelt. Years later, when I gave my husband a batch of homemade valentines (made from colored paper, doilies, and magazine cutouts) I was amazed at his amazement. He was so touched that I'd taken the time to do this; it wasn't a tradition in his family.

I still love homemade presents, both to give and to receive. There's something wonderful about a gift made with love. And if that gift is also made with foraged food, well that's even better. Because that's something no one could ever buy, anywhere. What's more precious than that?

This month I'm sharing ideas for homemade food and drink you can make to celebrate Valentines Day, or any other day. Put your heart into the making, and share these ideas with people you love.

Happy Foraging!

Prickly Pear Syrup

The color of prickly pear syrup makes it a perfect valentine's day ingredient. Use it in cocktails, mocktails, marinades, and desserts.

cranberry, rose hip, crabapple chutney

Cranberry, Rose Hip, & Crabapple Chutney

This chutney is both sweet and tart and goes great with cheese or meat. Plus it's red, and very pretty on a Valentine's Day table.

Plum Mousse

This simple, low carb dessert can be served in individual dishes or poured into a graham cracker crust and enjoyed as a pie.
