ABOUT THE EVENT:
JUSTIN HAYNES (Feb 24 20173 - Mar. 13, 2019) rocked our world with his vast music IMAGINATION and unique genius. On Monday February 24th, 2020 (his 47th birthday), two brief chapters of his life will be CELEBRATED: the MUSIC he created with REBECCA CAMPBELL some twenty years ago, and his riveting ADVOCACY on behalf of the HOMELESS, which defined his last days. The goal - beyond a RARE performance of this music - is to raise money for the PARKDALE NEIGHBOURHOOD LAND TRUST and to raise AWARENESS of Toronto's dire AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS

The Sweetest Noise will be a MUSICAL invocation - a celebration of Justin's awesome contribution to this crazy world. But the larger PURPOSE is twofold: MONEY and AWARENESS. Before his death last winter, Justin acquired a distinct new voice, compelled as he was to raise the alarm and shine a light on the City's out-of-control affordable housing crisis. PNLT's Herculean goal is to buy up properties in Parkdale - to protect them from speculation and gentrification, in an effort to secure multi-tenant, affordable, community-owned housing for those who have created COMMUNITY in Parkdale.

ABOUT JUSTIN HAYNES:
Justin Haynes was a thoughtful, hilarious man with an enormous talent, an empathetic heart, and a mental illness.

He was a good soul who struggled to make the best of a tumultuous life. He was a devoted father, a brilliant artist, and a rigorous teacher and mentor. A sonic master, he played guitar and piano with a deft hand and a keen ear. He composed beautiful, mercurial music, some of it complex and dissonant, much of it sweet and delicate – all of it artful, inquisitive, and endlessly inventive. He was a significant contributor to the big community of creative musicians in Toronto, a prolific, boundary-pushing improviser, and an enthusiastic collaborator and composer.

MAKING A LARGER DONATION :
On the night of the EVENT, we will invite attendees to PUBLICALLY PLEDGE DONATIONS to the Parkdale Neighbourhood Land Trust's affordable housing programs! We will also recognize and celebrate SMALL & LARGE DONORS.

In May 2019 the Land Trust acquired a 15 unit bachelorette building in Parkdale, removing it from the market and creating permanently affordable housing.

Justin Haynes's article "My Affordable Housing Trap" was published in NOW ten days before his death.

Justin Haynes's article "Shelter Skelter: Inside Seaton House, Canada's Largest Men’s Shelter", is a harrowing account of the three nights he spent there, and of his efforts to raise the issue of its inadequacies to the institutional powers that be and society at large.
