Just the news

We have a lot of news to share so this edition will be "just the news."  If you missed the long list of our Winter Learning events, please refer to last month's newsletter here.  FYI, we still have spaces in Bullet Journaling on February 20 and Artist Afternoon on February 28, so please sign up so we have adequate supplies.
The new year is off to a great start, first with our fabulous award from Millipore Sigma and now, a new Revive grant from the Children's Literacy Foundation for an exciting new project. We also have a fantastic new resource from Newsbank so you can get the local news without leaving home.  Even Ollie, our library mascot has news.... Keep reading below and enjoy!
(How many times does the word NEW appear in this newsletter?!)
Please feel free to contact me any time at jperrin@townofjaffrey.com.
Kind regards, Julie M. Perrin, Library Director - a.k.a. Ms. Julie
Our 2020 Winter Learning program, Hibernate with a Good Book, runs January 25th through March 7th and already has 66 participants.  This ambitious young patron forced us to up our game after she completed the first round of challenges in just a week!  Congratulations!

Thank you, Millipore Sigma

STEAM Learning - Life Science Edition

What will we do with $20,000 from Millipore for our 2020 STEAM Learning program?
Our STEAM Learning Program for 2020, funded by this generous grant, is a continuation and expansion of the STEAM Learning program that began in 2019.  It expands upon those initial components and includes:
  • STEAM Assistants, to be employed by the library, specifically to support STEAM programming - The local teen STEAM Assistants funded in 2019 were key players in mentoring underserved youth and interacting with their own community as learning facilitators.  2020 funding will allow us to continue this hugely successful learning model.
  • Collaborative Learning Space -  Millipore Sigma’s funding of this component in 2019 was transformative.  With the addition of the smart TV and learning tools in 2019, our STEAM Lab classes have been transformed.  We will expand upon the flexibility of that space by adding mobile lab components such as a lab demo center and microscope station.
  • Technology/equipment to support programs – In order to provide the greatest opportunity, we will expand our technology lineup to include microscopes, lab equipment, life science teaching tools, and additional Chromebooks and iPads to be used in our programs.
  • Outside Experts for Programming – In order to provide training to in-house staff and open up new possibilities to our target populations, we will host more “experts,” including professional science education program presenters to expand our programming lineup.

Citizen Scientist Literacy Project

A new program to be funded by a Revive grant from the Children's Literacy Foundation
One of the things we loved most about our Rural Libraries grant from CLiF last year was the family literacy piece of our Blanket Fort Reading Parties.  This year, in keeping with our eco-literacy theme, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day with our fourth annual Seed Lending Library kickoff (thanks to other grants we are working on...) and the launch of our exciting new Citizen Scientist Literacy Project, a family literacy initiative that promotes family learning about the natural world.  Watch for the unveiling of our Field Scientist bags at our Earth Day Family Eco-Literacy Party in April.  Thank you, CLiF for your continued support of literacy for Jaffrey's families!

Mr. Huggles arrived in style!

Winter Learning kicked off with a very successful Silly Stuffie Sleepover, which even included stuffed animals from the Town Manager, Police department, Building Inspector, and Conservation Commission, along with the stuffed friends of 40 children.  The event introduced families to all the library has to offer.  Read more here in the Keene Sentinel.

Famous Rooster Leads the Way with New Literacy Activities

Ollie, our library mascot has traveled the country with Jaffrey's families, from Mount Monadnock to Yellowstone!  He has visited so many places and collected so many souvenirs that a special patron provided him with his very own luggage!  His new Chicken friend/luggage will hold not only Ollie's souvenirs and photos, but now includes a chicken sized stuffie for cuddling, miniature books so children can read him bedtime stories, and travel journals so children can record in words and pictures their own adventures with Ollie. The librarians just had to turn this adorable duo into an opportunity for reading and learning!
Ollie and his new luggage may be checked out for a week at home, around town, or your next vacation.  Ask Julie or Andrea for more information.

Osmo

A new learning activity in the Lab
That new contraption with our Lab iPads is Osmo, a new gaming accessory that "is designed with reflective artificial intelligence, a groundbreaking technology that bridges the real and digital realms. The suite of Osmo games include apps that feature drawing, literacy, physics puzzles, spatial reasoning, coding, and more. Each one offers an "augmented reality" experience where mobile apps bring real-world accessories to life." (Osmo website)
In real terms, it is a new engaging way for children (and their caregivers) to interact, learning math, reading, science.... and it is quickly becoming the hottest learning toy in the Lab, as it appeals to all ages, with the ability to design individual use according to the age of the child.  Instead of passive use of a device, Osmo invites active, hands-on participation as the device "sees" what the child is doing on the table and reflects it back on the screen, in interactive learning games with broad appeal for children, parents, and grandparents alike.
Try it out anytime in the Lab!

You asked. We listened.

Saturday, February 15 - Weekend Whimsy!
Working families have asked for more Saturday family activities that are similar to our weekday programs, so we are trying a new program, once a month called Weekend Whimsy, led by Ms. Andrea and Ms. Linda!

What whimsical learning experience will your librarians cook up for your Saturday family fun at the library?

Bring the whole family to the library on Saturday, February 15 from 11 am - 12:30 pm for stories with Ms. Andrea. Then, be the first to try out Ms. Linda’s new craft or create with play-dough in the Lab.  Then, check out new books and movies to take home!

Special thanks to Sergeant Tucker and Officer LeBlanc of the Jaffrey Police for teaching our Mad Scientists and STEAM readers about fingerprints!

We have Tote Bags!

Wi-Fi hotspots, Ancestry, furnishings, programs... The Friends of the Library provide us with a lot of support.  Show your love of the library by purchasing a new Library Tote for just $10.   Totes are available at the Main Circulation Desk, and a sample is on display by the Main Floor Book Sale.  Thank you!

Holiday Closure

The library will be closed in honor of Presidents Day on Monday, February 17.
