Winter Dreaming

Positions Available + Order Fulfillment + Sowing + Events

Wow! February already! 2020 sure has started with a flurry of activity, news, and events both here on our little farm and in the world at large. Let's all pause a moment and take a deep breath, shall we?

* just breathe *
* innnnnnnnnn * oooooouuuuuuut *

Okay, with that, time for some announcements! We've had a number of significant staff changes the last few weeks and currently need to fill two Seed Packer / Order Picker positions as soon as possible. For more info, click here.

Due to these unforeseeable staff changes, order fulfillment has slowed a bit and we are currently shipping orders 6-10 business days after we receive them. We will close that window down to 4-7 business days as quickly as we can. If you ever have any concerns about your order, or need to make a rush request, please email us (questions@adaptiveseeds.com) and we can make it happen.

Sowing Tips: Timing and Lighting

And that is the perfect segway to remind you that the most common mistakes made when sowing in early winter through spring is poor timing (usually sowing too soon) and/or with poor lighting. When it comes to figuring out your timing we recommend the planting calculator provided at Margaret Roach's 'A Way to Garden' website. Don't know your last spring frost date? Find it here. For us, we don't sow our first round of summer annuals until the end of February or early March, about 8 weeks before they head outside. For more tips, check out our February 2019 newsletter in our archive.

up your seed-starting game, with seed-mad joe lamp’l (aka joe gardener)
As for lighting, us farmers tend to have propagation houses with heat tables and germination chambers. For those of you sowing in your home and using lights to get those plants started, Margaret Roach recently did a whole podcast with Joe Lamp'l about seed-starting and the results of his indoor lighting experiments. They talk about lights, where to position them and how long to run them, about watering and gear to make it all work smoother, and more. Having no direct experience with indoor plant lighting ourselves, we found this interview quite interesting. Check it out.
