1997 Grand Forks Flood: When History Became Personal

North Dakota History, Vol. 82, No. 1, Summer 2017

As our state leaders and emergency staff are meeting and planning for possible flooding across the state this spring, we bring you a look at the 1997 Grand Forks flooding. On April 19, 1997, the Red River breached the dikes surrounding Grand Forks, N.D., and East Grand Forks, Minn., forcing the evacuation of more than 60,000 residents. As residents fled to the drone of storm sirens, the business district burned and the Red River broadened claiming neighborhood after neighborhood. Read the story in North Dakota History.

Birth Records or How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Research

Being an archivist means providing access to the public; however, due to the sensitive nature of information, state and federal legal statues limit some types of documents that we are able to provide. For instance, finding birth records before the turn of the 19th century may prove difficult as North Dakota did not mandate the recording of births and deaths until the beginning of the 20th century, and even after this mandate, compliance was spotty until the 1920s. But there are other options to find this information — it may just take a bit more searching. Spotlight on Sites
Sweden State Historic Site

Yes, there is a state historic site named Sweden. Established April 28, 1879, the Sweden post office and general store in present-day Walsh County was housed in a log building built by John Magnus Almen, who was the original postmaster. All that remains of Sweden is a historical marker erected 450 yards north of its original location, which has been cultivated for many years. The marker can be seen just off North Dakota Highway 9, one and one-fourth miles west of Nash, Walsh County. Learn more about Sweden.

Become a Certified Local Government

A Certified Local Government (CLG) is a town, city, or county government that has met the requirements and applied for certification to become a fully participating partner in national and state historic preservation programs. A CLG benefits by having greater control of local preservation issues, better access to federal funding and guidance in resource management, and the ability to participate directly in the National Register nomination process. Learn how your community can qualify for this certification.
