Welcome to our Executive Email!

Through this small newsletter, we will share a recap of the previous month and some of the latest updates at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County.  Please browse some our Program happenings below & click the links supplied to read more!  Be sure to keep up to date through our Social Media...we are always updating our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram account!

Enjoy our end-of-year video featuring just some of the many events, workshops, and activities we have done here at CCE Onondaga in 2019! A new year and a new decade are here and we look forward to continuing our mission in Onondaga County!

  • Deadline Closed for returning member 2019-2020 renewed enrollment 
  • April 1: New members 2019-2020 enrollment deadline
On February 4th, Onondaga County 4-H youth attended the first ever “Governance Day” event with a trip to the Onondaga County Legislature to see how county government functions.  4-Hers met with County Executive Ryan McMahon for a discussion and Q & A session before attending an Onondaga County Legislative session where they were recognized with a Gold Seal Proclamation!

Agriculture
This year, CCE Onondaga continues to work with Refugee and Immigrant Self-Empowerment (RISE), a local non-profit organization, for Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program. Our Urban Agriculture Educator has been delivering classes on production skills, business planning, and food safety for 15 immigrant farmers who enrolled in the program starting January 2020. Farmers will plan and manage 1/8 acre of land this growing season and sell their produce at various markets in Syracuse between July and October!

 Environment
The first Skaneateles Lake Watershed Municipal Stakeholders meeting of the year was held on Wednesday, January 29th. The meeting took place at the historic Borodino Hall Community Center in Spafford, and featured a presentation on timber harvesting considerations for municipalities.

Attendees learned about timber harvesting best management practices to protect water quality, and the pros and cons of timber harvesting ordinances from Kristina Ferrare, CCE Onondaga Forestry Program Specialist. The meeting also provided time for municipal leaders and other stakeholders in the Skaneateles Lake watershed to share updates, projects, and concerns related to water quality.

  • Upcoming Adult Nutrition Education Classes are ongoing and offered weekly, bi-weekly or monthly at community organizations:  Local DSS offices and Workforce Development Centers, Emergency Feeding Sites, Libraries, Senior Centers, Health Care Facilities, Libraries, Community-Based organization serving families. 
     
Books & Cooks - Liverpool Head Start

And You Thought I Wasn’t Listening….

After resuming nutrition education classes at BOCES, the SNAP Ed Nutritionist noticed that our community partner who leads the class, had lost a significant amount of weight. At the end of the first lesson on My Plate, he shared that he had made changes such as cutting back his soda intake and cooking more often at home to achieve his weight loss. He joked and said "and you thought I wasn't listening to your lessons for the last three years."
