Inlet View Families,
As we approach the end of the third quarter, I can conclude that the more time we have together, the more we learn to appreciate and value our strengths and individual perspectives which ultimately make our school the wonderful place it is to learn and grow. Inlet View focus remains to cultivate a positive climate and create the best learning environment possible. High quality instruction and student learning are our highest priorities. Everything that we do at Inlet View is designed to help students learn in all areas and be successful well beyond their time in elementary school. Once again, that partnership between school and home is a key ingredient for student success. With that said, we hope that your students are feeling safe and supported.

Thank you for all your support with the Skate-Walk a Thon. It was super fun and everybody had a fabulous day.
Please keep collecting the pledges as the due date is coming up very soon, February 24th. This funds will help cover the cost of IB training for teachers, Spanish materials and library books, as we continue our IB implementation.

Don’t miss the opportunity to participate in this unique opportunity. Parents become partners in learning when students lead a conference. This is a time for parents to have one-to-one time with their child focusing on learning and achievement. Your role is to be a listener and to ask questions to your child about her/his experience at school.
Conferences will be happening next Wednesday and Thursday.

The Learner Profile, Reflective
|
|
Students who are Reflective know what they are good at and what their not. The try to think about these things, and they make changes where they can. They give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and consider their personal strengths and weaknesses in a constructive manner. How can parents help to develop students who are Reflective at home?
- Spend some time reviewing your child’s report card with them. They should have the opportunity to look at this document and consider it as well. Discuss it with them and truly consider their thoughts on their strengths and areas for improvement.
- Consider the goals that your child could set for the next term. Make a list not only of the goals, but of specific actions that can be taken to achieve these goals. You might want to list action that your child will take independently as well as action parents will take to support them. For example, if one of the goals your child sets for herself is to improve her writing, her action might be to keep a journal and write in it for at least 10 minutes each night. As a parent, you might decide that the two of you will participate in shared writing, for 30 minutes each week and produce a book of narratives together.

It has become the month the nation recognizes as a time to celebrate the strides and achievements black people have accomplished over the centuries.

Traffic Safety Guidelines
Please follow the guidelines below when picking up and dropping off your children in the parking lot.
1. Don’t park, stop, load or unload in front of the cones.
2. Pull vehicle to farthest available space along the sidewalk.
3. Students should exit vehicle out passenger side or curbside.
4. KEEP EYES FOCUSED ON ALL STUDENTS.
5. Do not use cell phone in school zone! It’s against the law!
6. Never leave your vehicle unattended.
7. Be aware of children and vehicles behind you.
8. Don’t block other vehicles.
9. Be patient during peak traffic times(before and after school)
10. Keep moving after your child either with staff or in school.
11. During pickup, rotate to back of line if child not in sight.
Thank you for keeping people safe by using traffic safety etiquette around the school zones.

APD Information: Illegal Use of Handheld Devices in School Zones
This APD NIXLE might be good information to pass along to parents in newsletters:
As of June 20, 2019 handheld cell phone use is illegal in active school zones and/or upon school grounds. If caught violating this new ordinance, the fine is a big one: 6 points on driver’s license and a $500 fine. Here are the pertinent points to know regarding AMC 9.28.055(E)(1):
- This law is in effect 6am – 9pm seven days a week, 365 days a year.
- This law applies to all signed school zones where the speed limit is 25 mph.
- This law applies to all school zones where there are temporary speed reductions to 20 mph or less (the school zones with the yellow flashing lights).
- This law does NOT apply to vehicles that are stopped (ex: parked in a school parking lot) or if the mobile device is being used hands-free.
- If a person in violation of this ordinance also causes a collision that results in injury or death, the penalty for this ordinance becomes a misdemeanor.

Dear Inlet View Orcas,
We will be hosting our Inlet View Scripps School Spelling Bee on February 28th at 1:00pm. Parents are welcome to attend. Each class from Grades 2-6 will be allowed two representatives to compete at the school level. Representatives will be chosen by a class spelling bee beforehand. Our Inlet View School Spelling Bee Champion will be registered to compete in the Alaska Scripps National Spelling Bee, held on Tuesday March 24th at the Anchorage Center for the Performing Arts, with a chance to go on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee!
Call for Parent Volunteers!
We need volunteers to help us for our school spelling bee! The spelling bee will be February 28th 1:00pm -3:30pm, we need one “Pronouncer”, one “Record Keeper”, and three Judges. If you are able to volunteer your time, please contact Kate Hamre at hamre_katherine@asdk12.org.

The Green Team is looking for an interested volunteer to help out with our recycling efforts. We are in need of someone to possibly help sort and and then take our plastic and aluminum to the appropriate local recycling centers for proper recycling. Battle of Books district competition was just held at West High School during the week of January 27th. Inlet View was well represented at both at the 5th/6th grade level and the 3rd/4th grade level. These students have been hard at work by reading and rereading twelve specific books. During practices, the students play games to memorize titles and authors as well as conduct mock battles by identifying the correct title and author to specific questions.
Please congratulate the following students and celebrate their hard work:
5th/6th grade teams tied one another for a 10th place finish:

6th place overall finish: Jamie Dongoski, Elliot Olson, Norah Botstein, Ben Shepherd
In one word, these students are AMAZING!

- Parents need to re-apply every year for free and reduced lunch even if you were approved last year.
- Students need to have money on their accounts for milk even if the student does not eat school lunch.
- Parents please email cafe_inletview@asdk12.org if you do not want the cafe manager to serve food, and also if you are ok with more than one meal or milk for your student(s).

Parents are Perfect!
We currently have several food service positions open at various schools throughout the district. Substitutes are also needed in many school cafeterias to assist with preparing food, and serving breakfast & lunch to students. Hours are perfect for parents: part-time and flexible. Hello Inlet View Community- We have an art IDEA!!!
Save your plastic bottle caps this whole school year!
All sizes and colors!
Before you toss it in the garbage, consider saving it to ReUse for an art project.
Water & juice, laundry soap and coffee containers all have plastic lids. Peanut butter and Gatorade too! Please collect these at home in a bag or jar, and when that is full, bring into school and empty into the art room collection bin.
When we have enough caps, we will turn them into an art project!!!!
Looking forward to seeing how many Inlet View community can collect.

Fun In February
Inlet View students have been fortunate to get outside during the month of January and ice skate on the rink, even with cold temps. Our students love to skate and thankfully, because of our awesome PTA, we have skates students can borrow if they don't have their own. I am still in need of skates for 5th and 6th graders so if you have a pair at home you are not using, I would be happy to take them off your hands and a student would be very happy to wear them. (size 7 or size 8).
For February, students at Inlet View will be participating in broomball, sledding, floor hockey as well as NYO games. February is a fantastic month to be outside as we experience more daylight and hopefully warmth in the coming days.
I'm so proud of our students at Inlet View and their participation in physical education.

Dente got after it today and skated with her class! It was her first time on skates and it was a wonderful connection between her and her students! She didn't fall once and even had moments of smiles behind some moments of fear.
What was most heart warming was watching her students help her come in!

Family Skate Night was a Big Success

The air temps were cold, but the skating was hot! Thanks to all who attended, socialized, and donated toward ice-rink maintenance. There is a banner in the ice rink listing ways to contribute if you missed skate night but would still like to help pay for nice ice.

Chromebook Cart Fundraiser was Another Big Success
|
|
|
Thank you, parents! Wow! We raised enough to purchase an additional Chromebook Charging Cart and a classroom worth of Chromebooks for Inlet View Teachers. These carts are tools that give teachers more time and flexibility when they need computers for classroom exercises. You may have noticed that schools are moving away from computer labs toward carts than can travel between classrooms. Inlet View teachers say THANK YOU!
