I recently penned an op-ed about the rise in anti-Semitic graffiti on LA school campuses and how we can overcome these expressions of hate. As a School Board member and former teacher, it’s unsurprising that I believe the answer lies in education. Whether it’s a conversation to celebrate our differences after hateful graffiti violates a campus, or a history lesson fairly representing minority contributions, or a resolution supporting student action to end police brutality—we can all play a role in creating a kinder world that embraces the diversity of all who have come, contributed, and enriched our nation’s communities.

Board District 4 and LA Unified celebrate Black History Month

Actions speak louder than words. Last week, the Board heard a report on District work to accelerate the progress of closing the achievement gap for students of color. We also passed a resolution to encourage Black History Month engagement, and one to support Black Lives Matter movements in our schools. And I was honored to join Pali High's Black Student Union performance and a fantastic jazz concert at Grand View Elementary!

School visits, council conversations, and community events
In addition to Pali High and Grand View ES, it was great to visit Bancroft MS, Topanga ES, Vine St ES, LeConte MS, Paul Revere MS! I was thrilled to emcee the Westchester Spelling Bee with BD4 students from Paseo del Rey, Open Magnet Charter, and WISH! I also attended the Encino Neighborhood Council meeting to discuss my vision for the future of our district.
School Spotlight: Uni HS does the Iowa caucus better than Iowa
The Iowa Caucus officials could have learned a thing or two from University High students, who hosted their own "mock caucus supported by YPO—with no reporting issues and an undisputed victory for student civic engagement!
We are thrilled to welcome our new Policy Director, Avery Seretan, a former teacher who began her career as high school education specialist serving students with special needs. She has Doctorate in Educational Leadership and a Masters in Public Policy from USC. After serving as a Special Education Coordinator for several years, Avery most recently served as a Program Officer at First 5 LA where she managed relationships with school districts across LA County to ensure that a common tool for childhood wellbeing was adopted.
