Report: Kurnell Cup, Kogarah Bay Sailing Club
Blakehurst, NSW

Braving the early stage of social distance regulations, three Wetas turned out for the Kurnell Cup which was supposed to be a marathon course from the Georges River around Botany Bay. But as the wind was gusting over 25 knots at the airport, the wise decision was taken to run the event in the more sheltered waters of Kogarah Bay. Keith was sporting his new self tacking jib and hoping the strong winds would increase the stuff-up rate of the competition.

At the start, Keith made an "inspired" move to start the race going towards the starboard end of the line on port which was "interesting". Meanwhile Steve and Annette started late after helping Keith and Paul launch (sorry) and then spent the rest of the race playing catch up.

Whether it was local knowledge, his new self-tacker or Paul's usual stuff-ups, Keith was ahead at the first mark and, despite catching him up at times upwind during the rest of the race, it stayed that way to the finish. It wasn't helped by the marks in sheltered locations from which Keith always seemed to get a nice gust away from, while Paul was marooned at the mark a few metres behind.

Keith sending it

Meanwhile Steve and Annette were having similar problems trying to get away from the holes at the rounding marks, although they did manage to keep ahead of the rest of the fleet but were beaten into 4th place by one local Laser on handicap with Keith the winner and Paul second overall.

We think the club members were impressed with the Weta but whether they can be persuaded out of their old (cheap) existing rides remains to be seen.
