Guest Speakers

We have several guest speakers scheduled for the convention. Headlining is Lion Daniel Marney Elkins  from  Delaware. Daniel was charter president of the Bellefonte Lions Club and currently serves his district as zone chair. He brings a wealth of knowledge in the areas of community organization, Lions Quest, social media, and video production. His speaking topics will be "Better Together-Successful Youth Projects" and "Strategic Recruitment and Community Partnerships".

Al Hedstrom comes to us from the Silverdale Sunrise Lions Club in Washington where he currently serves as Vice Council Chair of MD19. He's also the Northwest Area Global Action Team Leader. Al will be speaking on "Building Membership in Your Club".

Current Miss Idaho, Lion Grace Zimmerman from the Moscow Central Lions Club (and a former Leo in Weiser) will be sharing information with us as well. She was voted Miss Congeniality at the Miss America Scholarship Competition in December.

Also joining us will be Sandy Phillips with Camp Hodia, bringing us updates of new camps and projects to serve kids with Type 1 diabetes.

Your Club at the Convention

All clubs are requested to present a brief (2 minute limit) synopsis of their club. Consider telling about your signature projects or fundraisers, upcoming events (even charter parties), and in general what makes your club special.

Clubs are also asked to bring a gift basket for the raffle. The major prize this year is a 55" smart TV.

Elections

Candidates for 2020-21 governors are:
For District Governor - Lynn Johnson, Caldwell Lions Club
For 1st Vice District Governor - Kathy Donahue, Star Lions Club
For 2nd Vice District Governor - Betty Simpson, Weiser Lions Club

Lion Lynn

Lynn Johnson is a member of the Caldwell Lions Club where he's served on the board and as president and secretary. At the District level, he was a zone chair. Lion Lynn says he hasn't changed much since last year, so we are repeating his bio with a couple of updates.

I was raised on the Oregon Coast, about 5 miles from the ocean. When I became 18 and draftable age I joined the Air Force, stationed in California and Bermuda. In Bermuda, I met my wife.  After service we moved to Oregon where I studied at the University of Oregon.  Later we moved to Maine, about 5 miles from the ocean,  where we raised our daughter.  There I worked in sales and administration in microwave technology, carbon-carbon manufacturing, woodworking tool store,  and in the residential building business.  We moved to Idaho after retirement to be near our daughter.

I have always enjoyed woodworking and have a nice shop on Chicken Dinner Road in Caldwell.  I drive my pickup for Ground Support for the Forest Service, delivering supplies to drop points and meals to spike camps.

While in Maine, I became interested in becoming a Lion when I saw the good that a club there accomplished for their community.  Our town did not have a club, so I helped charter a club in 2011.

Lion Kathy D.

Lion Kathy Donahue grew up on a farm in Oklahoma. She studied elementary education and speech language pathology, obtaining a master of science degree and working as a speech pathologist for several years. She and her husband, Steve, moved with the Air Force from Oklahoma to Mountain Home, then on to Plattsburgh, New York, before returning to the west and moving to Idaho in 1992. Kathy now works (occasionally) as a real estate broker.

Kathy and Steve are both charter members of the Star Lions Club, which was formed in 2005. She has served as club president, VP, secretary and membership chair, and at the district level as Cabinet Secretary/Treasurer, Global Leadership Team Leader, IT, newsletter editor, and Envision trustee.

Kathy is a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, enjoys golfing, traveling, and fantasy baseball, and loves her dog, a Chesapeake, Inca, and Steve's Chessie, Leo. She is also active with Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief and Rescue Northwest, fostering, transporting, and providing home visits for rescued dogs.

Lion Betty

Joining Lions is one of the best things I've ever done! I feel blessed to be a Lion and am elated to be able to "throw my hat in the ring" for 2020-2021 39W Second Vice District Governor.

Those that know me will tell uu that I do my "research", then set my goals, "top it" with creativity, and "sprinkle" it with enthusiasm. My personal theme has been/continues to be, "Connecting ~Lion to Lion." I tend to be a Lion that is a "boots on the ground" individual; interacting, gleaning, sharing, and learning with/from my fellow Lions. Don't be surprised if you receive a phone call from me, just to "connect", share, and hear your valuable input. A "thank you" must go to each and every Lion; Lion to Lion is an extremely valuable asset. I APPRECIATE YOU!

Some years ago, I was asked by my school district to teach a terminally ill (cancer)10 year old student at his home. Being his personal teacher was one of those landmark moments on my "highway of life". As a result, childhood cancer is a cause dear to my heart and is one of the areas of service for Lions International.

I'm looking forward to seeing you at the 39W Midwinter Convention in a couple of weeks. I hope you'll be there with "bells on", and "Connecting ~Lion to Lion"!

With Lion Spirit and Enthusiasm,
Lion Betty Simpson

Notes from the editor

If you are a club secretary or president, it's your responsibility to share the newsletter with your club-the mailing list does not, unfortunately, include everyone.
If you are not on the mailing list and want to be added, use the subscribe link or contact me directly. Snail mail available on request.
If you have club events, news, photos, speakers, projects to share, please send to me or to your zone chair for publication. Have a flyer? Send that, too. I can't make up enough stuff to fill the newsletter, although I try.
Publication is the 10th; deadline to submit news is flexible, but end of the month is preferred.
Comments, suggestions, complaints-always welcome!
