THE FILM:
Fiddlin'
Fiddlin' is a celebration of a place, its people and their music. Fiddlers and pickers pass their uplifting music from one generation to the next keeping Old-Time and Bluegrass alive in the Appalachian Mountains.
Sisters Julie Simone and Vicki Vlasic returned to their Appalachian roots to film Fiddlin' at the World's Oldest and Largest Fiddler's Convention in Galax, Virginia. Julie and Vicki were given permission to film for the first time in the convention's 80 year history after Moose Lodge members discovered the sisters were locals and that they knew their grandpa.
WINNER of 15 Awards on the festival scene- from Best Documentary and 7 Audience Choice Awards!

Living Room Live Open Mic Night
Doors & Sign up at 6pm
Music at 7pm
We invite all singer/songwriters to join us for this Thursday's open mic night, a.k.a. Living Room Live. Named Creative Loafing's Best of the Bay 2014 and 2017 for "Best Open Mic Night", the Hideaway Cafe has opened up its doors and its stage for the past 10 years to countless rising talents as well as seasoned veterans who have made a career of music.
Consumate host John Kelly, a singer/songwriter himself, started this weekly tradition 10 years ago after building a stage as an extension of the recording studio. And the rest is history. The talent has been immense, the highlight reel endless... and the memories priceless. You won't find a more appreciative audience than you will here at St Petersburg's Original Listening Room!
Come down and check in with Rebekah and get on the list. The list is now built using a lottery system in an effort to keep the night open to newcomers and to keep every Thursday new and exciting. This also encourages artists to support and get to know one another. Countless collaborations and musical relationships have been built on chance encounters here at "Living Room Live". For signup - you have an option to choose one of two time frames. Basically EARLY (7pm-9pm) and LATE (9:15 - close). Your name is pulled out of a hat and you have 15 minutes to do your thing. You can drop your name in starting at 6pm. Then singer/songwriters take the stage to share 2-3 original songs and then "pass the mic" so to speak. The signup pool fills up fast so be sure to get here early and be sure you are here for your chosen time frame. Artists - if you'd like to get the recording studio "in the red" for your set, be sure to indicate that when you sign up (solos only). For as low as $35, you can have files of your performance dropbox'd to you or handed over on a special keepsake "hideaway" flash drive. Be sure to leave your email and phone number if you choose to record.
Invite your favorite music loving friends out for some incredible original music from some of St Pete's finest! As always Thursdays are free so come on out and get a taste of what St Pete's Original Listening Room is all about.

The Resonant Rogues
Doors at 6pm, Music at 8pm
$10 Tickets
“American folk music has always had a populist perspective, a vision of music made by the people, for the people. Asheville, North Carolina roots band The Resonant Rogues know this well, for they’ve traveled the byways and highways of America, even crossed the water to Europe and the Mediterranean with instruments and songs in tow. Anchored by the songwriting duo Sparrow and Keith Smith, the Rogues have shared songs with train-hoppers in New Orleans, busked on the streets of Budapest, learned Turkish Romani dance in Istanbul, and marched in protest in the hills of Appalachia. Throughout, the stories they’ve heard and the people they’ve met have fueled their music, which abounds with influences like Eastern European Romani brass bands, New Orleans street jazz, old-time stringbands, Woody Guthrie anti-fascist folk, French jazz Manouche, and Middle Eastern rhythms. It’s not easy to pull off such a bold combination of genres, but The Resonant Rogues learned this music in person from the people who created it, so they have a tie to each tradition and a working knowledge of what this music means to the ordinary people that make this music every day. It’s a tintype view on the modern world,a cracked image that reflects the past through a prism of the future. –Hearth Music

Join us for Grant Peeples CD Release of "Bad Wife" February 15, 2020 at 8pm
A self-described “tree-hugger that watches NASCAR, and Buddhist with a gun below the seat,” Grant Peeples is known for his axe-sharp socio-political tunes, raucous humor and heart-gigging ballads.
Grant is on tour in support of a new release, 'Bad Wife,' a unique concept album and a departure from his usual repertoire. Not known for performing other peoples' songs, he did not write a single song on ‘Bad Wife.’ This album is made up of songs written by all women songwriters, mostly women with whom he has worked or performed, including the title track ‘Bad Wife,’ written by Austin singer-songwriter Ali Holder. “Each song was originally heard in a live setting, where it entered me, worked me over, and never left. I didn’t go looking for these songs; they found me. Bludgeoned me. And my learning them has been an exercise of re-discovery, a search for those original nerves they struck,” he explains. The album is produced by iconic Roots/Americana producer-performer Gurf Morlix, who also produced and performed on four of Grant's previous records.
The timing of the release is significant. It is happening in the year of the 100th anniversary of women getting the right to vote. This record is Grant’s tribute to this milestone in women’s history, and his opportunity to express his appreciation and love of their work and influence. He emphasizes the tribute with the theme of the album and the tour, ‘Listen to Women. ’
Touring with Grant is Cambridge MA virtuoso violinist Mark. He studied violin at Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne Australia. He has toured extensively around the world, incorporating musical styles from India, China, and Indonesia into his compositions and improvisations. On this tour he tunes his ear to Grant's rendering of the songs of 'Bad Wife,' which includes songs written by Eliza Gilkyson, Carrie Elkin, Telisha Williams, Dayna Kurtz, Caroline Spence, Phoebe Blume, Sarah Mac, Rebekah Pulley, Ali Holder, Myshkin, and Alicia McGovern.
Grant is the recipient of the Focus Foundation Award for Creative Excellence, which cited the “humor, compassion and wisdom of his songs,” and their "unflinching social insight and cultural acuity.” Grant tours coast to coast, and is a regular performer at The Woody Guthrie Folk Festival, the 30A Songwriters Festival, and The Florida, Folk Festival. January 2019 marked a second tour in The Netherlands, where FolkForum.nl described him “…a pure storyteller, in the best American folk tradition…” and his show “…one of those gems that you will remember for a long time…”
