February 2020 Newsletter Special Edition

Just around the corner!
With the AGM fast approaching, we thought we would take this opportunity to help you see a little of what goes on behind the scenes of our coop. With a little knowledge and some inspiration, maybe this will be the year you jump in with your time and talents!

Message from our Prez

'The essentials of life - we can impact all of these for good, if we have the will and desire' - Chris

I represented our co-op at the SENS event in January and the Annual Land to Table Forum last weekend. Imagine slogging through mud with head down and mind closed, only to be suddenly transported by a hot air balloon that lifts one up to see the big picture and new ideas. That's what such events can do for us. To see how little actions by many people, day in and day out DO make a difference; how intention and clear-seeing can overcome doubt, cynicism, discouragement; that continuing to go forward with joy and appreciation cannot help but result in creating a better life, a better community and a better world to leave behind. Air. Water. Food. Shelter. The essentials of life - we can impact all of these for good, if we have the will and desire. Our co-op is a means of caring for these things. Get involved. Bring your passion. You are most welcome. Kindest regards, Chris

Local First - help us do it better!
Our co-op is committed to bringing in products from businesses and farmers within 100 miles. Are you passionate about healthy, ethically sourced food? Do you enjoy sourcing and interacting with local farmers? There is a meeting tentatively scheduled for Sunday March 1 at 1 pm at our co-op to explore how a small group of committed people can do this essential work of connecting with and supporting LOCAL.

“DECISIONS ARE MADE BY THOSE WHO SHOW UP”

What is the Board of Directors?

The board is a group of 7 who govern our Co-op (MCC). The term is 2 years. The board meets once a month for 3+ hours. Occasionally there are emergency meetings which are held by Zoom, phone or email. Board Members are on 1-2 committees to support the operations. They are also expected to represent MCC at special co-op-sponsored events, Village initiatives and regional events.

There are 5 positions open: 4 are for 2 years and 1 position is for 1 year. Nominees will be posted in March.

What does the board of directors do?

The members, as co-owners of MCC, entrust the Board of Directors with the governance of their shared asset. The Board sets goals, objectives and administrative policies;  adopts long-term business strategic plans; regularly connects with store staff, volunteers and membership to co-operatively share ideas and recommendations regarding Co-op operations; hires and evaluates employees' performance; and holds ultimate accountability for sound management of MCC.

Why you should run for the board?
Fulfil your desire to engage with a real-time community of your neighbours and friends to do something truly meaningful for Lumby, and to be a shining example of what a small group of people can accomplish.
We are looking for individuals who have a genuine desire to assist with the success of the Co-op. We are looking for candidates who are open-minded, speak openly and honestly, are good listeners and team players, have experience with other boards, and understand business. You must also have been a member of MCC for 6 months at the time of the AGM.
Those who are successful commit to being actively involved on committees, and cooperatively work together with fellow directors, appointed and volunteer staff, and the membership at large for the common good of the Co-op.

What are the benefits of serving on the board?

Develop professional skills in leadership, teamwork and management

A Note From Your Purchaser

Things are busy at the co-op.  Lots of new products coming in so be sure to check them out!  Did you know we now carry organic, gluten-free licorice? Also Hemp Bliss milk is back!  And we have been getting produce in twice a week which keeps our cooler full!  We have had some fun things for you to try like jicama root (great pre-biotic) and Cara Cara oranges (so yummy)!

Watch on our Facebook page on Monday’s for what is coming for produce later on in the week to help with your meal planning!

Also, a reminder that we are starting to look forward to a new season for local produce.  If anyone is interested in growing some fruits or veggies for us let us know and we will provide you with the growing requirements needed and how our consigner program works…and we can also provide you with a list of what things we were short of last year.

Have a wonderful February everyone!
