Vikram's Vikings victors at Super Nines
In what was described by many as a hugely successful day, the 3rd annual Brisbane Masters' Super Nines carnival was held last Saturday at Kedron Wavell's home ground at Burringbar Park, Chermside.
The 2020 Super Nines champions are Vikram's Vikings who defeated the inaugural Super Nines champions PR St Andrews in the final. Last year's winners Bundy Rumbos finished 3rd.
Twelve teams competed in two pools of six, with the top two teams meeting in the final.
All teams played at least 5 games of 2 x 15-minute halves, with only 9 players on the field at any one time and some special rules for short corners applied.
There were approx 180 players, with teams coming from Bundaberg (Rumbos), Sunshine Coast (Skeco), and Gold Coast (Tropics).
As well, some ad hoc teams were formed, as in Vikram's Vikings, BaaBaa's and Raiders, along with some Brisbane Club teams. Click the link below to see the list of players.
A special thank you to all involved ... everyone contributed in their own way to make the day a wonderful success.
Watch for the next Newsflash for a survey for the 2021 Super Nines and an "official" wrap-up of events from Brisbane Masters' President, Ian Knights.

What does one do with old jerseys?
Seamstress and sewer extraordinaire, Robyn Comino (SWU's Rusty Tuck's aide de camp), came up with a wonderful idea for what to do with all those old jerseys!
Make them into a quilt!!!
Robbie Ray of Bulimba MHL5 team had a cupboard full of them after many years of playing club, rep and international hockey tournaments. And Robyn went to work to create this fine piece of (practical) art.
Robyn is prepared to take orders to make your dreamcoat of "many jerseys and colors".
Contact MastersVoice@bha.org.au for more details.

Pictured left is the reverse side of the quilt – a special memento of Robbie in his Bulimba playing uniform.

Masters' at 34? Yes, but with a catch!
At the Hockey Australia Masters Delegates’ meeting held in Melbourne on Saturday 7th Dec 2019, a change to the age eligibility for HA Women’s and Men’s Masters Championships was confirmed.
The Over 35 Championship at each HA Championship will now become the Over 34 Championship.
Players who will be 34 years of age by 31st December 2020 (i.e. Born 1986) are eligible to compete in the HA Over 34 years Championships for Women and Men.
As such, the Qld Masters will uphold the same ruling. (ie allow 34yo to play).
But the catch is ... the Brisbane Hockey Assn has decreed that 34 year olds will NOT be able to play in the Brisbane Masters competition. It will remain at minimum age of 35 years by 31/12/20.
For a 34-Y-O to nominate for selection into a Brisbane Rep Team to compete at the state championships, the player MUST REGISTER on the Brisbane Masters Database. (it's free!).
Here is the LINK!
In fact, every Brisbane Masters' player must be registered on the database. :-)

So that's where it comes from!
SHOT OF WHISKEY
In the old west a .45 cartridge for a six-gun cost 12 cents. So did a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he would often give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This became known as a "shot" of whiskey.
THE WHOLE NINE YARDS
American fighter planes in WW2 had machine guns that were fed by a belt of cartridges. The average plane held belts that were 27 feet (9 yards) long. If the pilot used up all his ammo, he was said to have given it the whole nine yards.
PASSING THE BUCK / THE BUCK STOPS HERE
Most men in the early west carried a jack knife made by the Buck knife company. When playing poker it was common to place one of these Buck knives in front of the dealer so that everyone knew who he was. When it was time for a new dealer the deck of cards and the knife were given to the new dealer. If this person didn't want to deal he would "pass the buck" to the next player. If that player accepted then "the buck stopped there".
COBWEB
The Old English word for "spider" was "cob".
SHIP STATE ROOMS
Travelling by steamboat was considered the height of comfort. Passenger cabins on the boats were not numbered. Instead they were named after States. To this day cabins on ships are called staterooms.
SLEEP TIGHT
Early beds were made with a wooden frame. Ropes were tied across the frame in a criss-cross pattern. A Straw mattress was then put on top of the ropes. Over time the ropes stretched, causing the bed to sag. The owner would then tighten the ropes to get a better night's sleep.
BARRELS OF OIL
When the first oil wells were drilled they had made no Provision for storing the liquid so they used water barrels. That is why, to this day, we speak of barrels of oil rather than gallons.
HOT OFF THE PRESS
As the paper goes through the rotary printing press friction causes it to heat up. Therefore, if you grab the paper right off the press It is hot. The expression means to get immediate Information.
