"REPENT AND BELIEVE THE GOSPEL"
|

About 1500 years ago Pope Gregory is credited with the phrase that accompanied the ancient ritual of signing people with the cross: Memento, homo, quia pulvis es, et in pulverem reverteris." ("Remember, man, that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return"). Here in 2020 at an all-girls school, that carries an unhelpful emphasis. There is however, a beautiful alternative: "Repent and believe in the Gospel."
But it is only beautiful if people also know what it means.
Too many of our young people associate "repentance" with sin, guilt, and shame. In fact, it is much more helpful to think of repentance as 'turning away from the things that harm us.' We need to encourage our young people to turn from feelings of self-loathing and anxiety toward the love of God. That is an opportunity to turn away from thinking we are ugly or stupid to instead embrace the God who has made us "wonderfully and powerfully" (Ps 139).
In the same way, we need to find the right words to explain a Gospel which many young people believe is a fairy story. It is up to us to communicate the Good News and invite people to participate in the kingdom. As followers of Christ, we aspire to the words of Isaiah (58.6-9): to break the chains of injustice, eradicate exploitation, free the oppressed, and cancel debts; to feed the hungry, welcome the homeless, clothe the cold, and make authentic relationship.
Therefore, to "repent and believe the Gospel" is not just accepting that God has undertaken a costly cosmic reconciliation, but that now we have a responsibility to keep that work going. We are to build a world that confronts climate change, shares its food and wealth resources abundantly, and rejects discrimination of all kinds - for any injury caused to another is a desecration of the name of God (Lev).
So, repent, believe the Gospel, and choose to wear the sign of Christ on your forehead this Ash Wednesday, that all might see you belonging to the Family of God.

Consecrated as a Church in 1864 serving both Māori and Pākehā, and as we approach the 10th anniversary of the consecration of Taranaki Cathedral, it is with delight that we announce the appointment of Jacqui Paterson and Jay Ruka as joint Deans of Taranaki Cathedral. Jacqui will also serve as Archdeacon of Parininihi and Jay will also serve as the establishment Director of the Paul Reeves Education Centre.
This joint appointment reflects the commitment of Taranaki Cathedral to the journey of reconciliation and to being a centre of leadership for both Te Hui Amorangi o Te Upoko o Te Ika and for the Diocese of Waikato and Taranaki.
As Bishops we know that Treaty-based, Gospel shaped relationships are a deep intergenerational commitment of our Church and that Taranaki Cathedral has an important part to play in leading us all on this journey.
As Bishops we want to walk humbly and care-fully with each other and we call on all our people to join us. We welcome Jacqui and Jay into this shared leadership with us in Taranaki. Along with the other members of the Cathedral team we have confidence that Taranaki Cathedral will be well placed to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
More details of this appointment, which will be unique in this Church, will be shared in the near future. In the meantime please mark 11 am on Saturday April 4th into your diaries. Our special guest and preacher will be Te Pīhopa o Aotearoa, The Most Reverend Don Tamihere. We invite you to join us as we celebrate this renewed beginning.

THE VERY REVEREND WENDY SCOTT'S INSTALLATION
|
|
We are delighted to have welcomed the Very Reverend Wendy Scott (and family) to the Waikato Cathedral Church of St Peter. It was terrific to host the Diocese of Wellington in a full Cathedral with outstanding singing. We were honoured to offer hospitality to guests, friends, and family from across the country as well as our Hamilton Mayor, Paula Southgate, and the MP for Hamilton East, David Bennett.
Te Manawa o te Wheke and her Bishop, +Ngarahu, played a central role in the commissioning and installation of our first Māori Dean of the Cathedral. Wendy is of Ngāpuhi descent and is excited about this opportunity to work alongside our brothers and sisters.
Please pray for Wendy and her family as they adjust to life in the Waikato and respond to God's call.

The St John's College Trust Board provides scholarships to Ordained Clergy, Candidates for Ordination and Lay Members of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia pursuant to the provisions of section 7 and section 3(1)(c) of the St John's College Trusts Act 1972.

Women Clergy and women lay leaders are warmly invited to an evening with the Anglican Women's Studies Council. This is a rare opportunity to meet and talk with this three tikanga group.
The Anglican Women's Studies Centre was set up by General Synod to advance and service the needs of the women of this Church, particularly those engaged in theological training.
Last year there were three separate tikanga hui, and this year will see a large combined three tikanga hui. Program ideas welcome!We are currently publishing a book ' Telling Our Stories', marking the 40 years since women ere ordained to the priesthood. Do feel welcome to come , or to get in touch.
