With its infectious and life threatening capability, Covid-19 has had a crippling effect on individual movement and consequently on the Indian economy.  As expected this has had a devastating effect on the Restaurant Industry. In order to combat this threat with public safety being a primary concern, the authorities have sealed borders in most states, enforced a ‘stay at home’ strategy and curtailed modes of transport and services among which is an order to close all the restaurants till 31st March currently.

A large number of Restaurants closed down before the orders were enforced for the safety of their customers and employees.  Many are operating Home Delivery which is permitted.

The National Restaurant Association of India is actively lobbying with the Government for relief and concessions including:

  • Deferment of all statutory dues – GST, VAT, TDS, Renewal of Excise License Fees
  • Restoration of input tax credit on GST
  • Unemployment pay cover for employees
  • Deferment of payment of Utilities
  • Moratorium on re-payment of loans and other bank facilities
  • Notification invoking “Force Majeure” clause with all landlords and mall developers for rent payments

We do hope that the State and Central Governments provide the much necessary support to the Restaurant Industry and help support  the 7.3 million employees working in the Restaurant Industry in India.

Independent Restaurants Brace for the Unknown

Big chains seem equipped to weather the coronavirus shutdowns, but smaller businesses are scrambling for help from governments and customers.

Subway to Slash Franchise Royalty Payments by 50 Percent

Two of the world’s largest QSR chains Subway and McDonald’s are supporting franchisees in the US with franchisee fee reductions. With Franchisee sales dropping between 40-80% in March due to the spread of Covid-19, Subway said it would reduce franchisee fees by 50%.

Similar steps need to be taken by F&B Brands in India to help support their franchisees in these difficult times.

The Future of Food in India, Delivered

2020 is beginning to look like a year where all the bigwigs of the restaurant industry are gearing up for their foray into the delivery kitchen space, with some of them already in the grips of launching their delivery ventures across India

Stand alone restaurants shut from midnight on March 17

"As concerned citizens, restaurant owners are taking every necessary precaution, reiterating steps to follow the new directives among their staff and are closely watching the situation. Sustained closure of Restaurants, Bars and Cafes across various parts of India will result in a drastic number of lost jobs and loss of livelihood for employees. It will also cause significant losses in business and potentially lead to many businesses closing down permanently" says Samir Kuckreja
