February  2020:  Rudolf Steiner's warnings about climate change - ecological damage

Most people are now aware that the health of our planet is under serious threat, because of the pollution of the world’s atmosphere, and its eco-system in general. This polluting is a tragic result of the irresponsible attitudes which have determined how the industrialization of the world has been carried out for some centuries. It is only in recent decades that large industrial and technological enterprises have become aware of their duty to care for the environment.

Generally, the attitude underlying modern civilisations consists of thoughts which are blind to the needs of the human soul and the Earth’s eco-system. Rudolf Steiner points out that this way of thinking is deeply embedded in modern consciousness, and exerts huge power in many areas of life. So a heightened environmental awareness will help the Earth, but this is not enough. The Earth will continue to become ever more sick, if people do not develop a spirituality; that is, if ‘dead’ thoughts about everything in creation continue to prevail. To help the survival of the Earth, humanity needs for example, awareness of the existence of the ethers (life-energies), as the basis of all life, and of the soul as a reality, not just an abstract word. The destructive impact of materialistic thinking is the main problem, for this leads to actions or policies which result in ecological damage or in socially de-humanizing ways of being. Inspiration for a more spiritual view of the world exists in abundance in Rudolf Steiner’s life-work.

If a more spiritual way of thinking about human nature and the world we live in, does not happen, then, Rudolf Steiner warned, “the most terrible catastrophes will occur (to the planet’s eco-system) and humanity will have to continue to live on the Earth in an entirely different way – a way that most people today do not even dream of”.(24 Nov.1921)
He even told one audience that if people continue to think in a materialistic way, then after a great (ecological) catastrophe, humanity would have to start all over again, on the (slowly healed Earth)  or may even have to wait until another cosmic Age, when our planet re-emerges into the physical plane.(27 Feb. 1910)
 
Next month, we shall consider a very positive and important scientific discovery from the 1970’s that confirms the existence of the ethers - this discovery has been mainly ignored, but it could open the way for research into the possibility of using etheric energy. That would be another solution, in addition to the other renewable energy ideas.
