Supporting a healthy, active region.
Kia ora and welcome to the new year and a new decade. We hope you had a relaxing break and have returned to work reenergized.  2020 promises to be full of exciting opportunities to get active.

This term we focus on the saying “It takes a village to raise a child”, which is an African proverb that means child upbringing is a communal effort. The villagers' look out for the children. On this theme, we share examples of community activities that have been available in our region. We also introduce Sport Wellington’s Healthy Active Learning Team and share some activities for you to try.

Keep up with the Play campaign launches today!
Keep up with the play is a marketing campaign that has just launched and will be a term that you will hear over the coming months in the media. It has a focus on those responsible for delivering youth sport – be it parents, coaches, administrators, sport leaders or teachers - to understand the challenges in youth sport and implement positive change based on the Balance is Better philosophy. Balance is Better is an evidence-based philosophy that encompasses Sport New Zealand’s overall approach to youth sport over the next five years, its focus is to dispel five key myths about youth sport. The ultimate goal is to ensure that all young people have a quality experience in sport.

In our March newsletter we will highlight how a child’s quality experience with physical activity occurs in the early childhood and primary years, feeds positively through into the youth space, and connects with the Balance is Better philosophy.

Activity: Changing Gears

After a long break, our fitness can sometimes decrease and with lots of opportunities to engage in active recreation in and outside of school over the summer months, it can be helpful to start rebuilding our fitness levels. Many of your students will be involved in the Weetbix Tryathlon later in the term. Get creative and see if you can play this game running, with wheels, or in the water.

Activity: Community Helpers

As community is our focus this term, we are looking at making community connections. An important element of that is learning about the different types of people you might meet in your community and what they do to help keep our community spirit running high. This activity gives you several ways of introducing well-known community figures to your under-fives, engaging them in imaginative play and movement.

Helping your child connect with others in the community

Connecting with the wider community can have many benefits to our wellbeing (hauora). Through greater connections tamariki develop a strong sense of spiritual wellbeing (taha wairua) as they get a sense of belonging to a network, place and community.

“People other than friends help us in different ways. A coach might listen to your child’s worries, a friend’s parent might give your child a lift to school or a librarian might help with finding a book. Children who have strong community connections and links to supportive people are more likely do better later in life.”
